I was cold-called by a company called Banking Solutions Bureau yesterday, offering to reclaim all my bank charges plus 8% interest for £49. I said I'd think about it, and took their number. Then I went to read up online. The first thing to do is to request a list of charges made since July 2001. You're meant to do this by post, according to everything I've read. But HSBC have an Online Secure Messaging System which gives you a reference number to go along with the message, and everything gets properly stored and dealt with. So I decided to try my luck and sent a message online this morning to request that the details be sent to me by post. I had a response very quickly, stating that my request had been forwarded to the appropriate department, but that it may take up to 40 days "due to increased requests of this nature" (actually 40 days is the maximum period they legally have to respond - but I can understand if they're managing the workload with an aim to clear current items in 40 days time.) That's a lot of time saved with preparation of a document, printing it out, putting it in an envelope, stamping it, posting it, waiting for it to be sent, waiting for a reply... So now I just have to wait for the list, then see how much it is, work out what 8% interest would come to, and see if I can find a more professional company to undertake the task.
(As a side note, I'm glad I proof-read this - or you'd have been confused about what bank accounts have to do with a cake-making bureau...)
