GHC health insurance? Tell me everything!

After 15 years of various blunders, I am thinking of switching from Dean to GHC during the upcoming open enrollment period. I might have done it sooner, but as near as I can recall I was mostly put off by the fact that there were, like, three dental places you could go in town. I hear that this is no longer the case ( Read more... )

I've been with GHC since 2001, and been totally happy, although I haven't had any serious illnesses, or anything complicated that would test the system.

Copays: 5$ for generic-brand prescriptions--I think it's 10 or something for non-generic but I've never needed to pay more. No co-pay for checkups or... is it called urgent care? The same-day but non-emergency room one.

I only had one very short experience with the complimentary medicine stuff, and found that there was a LONG wait--like, 2-3 months long. I've had no trouble getting referrals though, either complimentary or conventional medicine. The complimentary stuff happens at all the clinics, I think; they gave me some options when I talked to them about the massage.

I'm not sure which hospital they use for emergencies, but I've been referred to the UW before for non-emergency things, and they deliver babies at St. Mary's.

One thing that kind of sucks is that they've moved a bunch of things out to the clinic in Fitchburg--I know you need to go out there for optometry.

For a PCP, I hugely recommend Dr. Michelle Brogunier if she's taking new patients. She's super nice and gentle, and takes your whole life into account at checkups (asks about family, stresses at work, exercise routine, that kind of stuff). Seems to keep up on the literature, talks to you like a fellow smart person. I know a few other grad students and professional women at the UW who have had her and they all think she's great too. It takes 1-2 months to get in for a basic checkup appointment, but there's a reason for the popularity.

I'm not sure what the current state of dental stuff is, honestly it's been 2 years since I went because none of the places are anywhere near a bus line, and they were all a total pain in the rear about appointments. The docs were perfectly nice, but it seriously took me a year to get a "six-month checkup". I just got annoyed with the process.
