A few thoughts on Chrismass

I find history and modern misconceptions fascinating.

Christmas is upon us. People are out buying gifts, arranging travel plans and decorating. I'm not sure how many people know that in the 17teenth century many cities banned Christmas. For example 1659 to 1681, the celebration of Christmas was outlawed in Boston. Anyone found celebrating Christmas was fined five shillings. The puritans were not a fan of christmas nor were many of the other religious denominations who first settled America. The Puritans, and later the Presbyterians, Baptists, and Methodists associated the celebration of Christmas with the sacrilegious celebration of the holiday by the Church of England. Otheres viewed it as the more sinister theology of "Popery." In the eyes of these religious sects the celebration of Christmas had no basis in scripture and was a form of idolatry.
English customs fell out of favor, after the American Revolution. Christmas one "english" celebrations which was looked poorly upon, in fact, Congress was in session on December 25, 1789. For the over fifty years the celebration of Christmas was limited in America. For most of the country Thanksgiving was the holiday of the season and December 25th was just another winter day.
Prior to the American Civil War, the North and South were divided on the issue of christmass. Many Northerners considered it sinful to celebrate Christmas and thought Thanksgiving was a much more appropriate holiday. In the South Christmas played an important role in the social season. The first three American States to declare Christmas a legal holiday were located in the South: Alabama in 1836; and Louisiana and Arkansas, both in 1838.Christmas wasn’t declared a federal holiday until June 26, 1870

Interestingly enough on December 6, 1999, federal judge U.S. District Judge Susan J. Dlott ruled that Christmas has become so secular that the government does not violate the Constitution by declaring it a federal legal holiday.
