Good News on the Job Front

Well, I've managed to get another job - not in Recruitment though.

I've had so many Recruitment interviews, and been knocked back on all of them. They all say that they love me, but knock me back for various reasons, the most common of which are that I don't have the sales experience they are looking for and (my personal favorite) that I'm not the image they want to portray.

In othe words, they don't want to hire the fat chick. You see, in the world today, the only thing that you can discriminate against is size - as in weight.

Recruitment, much as I love the industry, is very very superficial when it comes to looks. Even at Trace, there was a lot of subtle pressure on me to loose weight (even though I've been doing so).

However it's worse in other agencies, where unless you're a size 10 in a $500 suit, you're not considered "professional" enough.

Ah well - let's see. I am meeting with the manager of a newer agency in town next week, to discuss future positions with them.

Oh - my new job. Well, it's a contract with the Department of Emergency Services, working on a major IT Project within the Fire & Rescue Services. It involves taking 4 different systems that they use and combining them into one. It's been going about 12 months already, and is due to finish at the end of 2008.

I'm the Project Secretary (though the official title is Project Support and Communications Officer) and report directly to the Project Manager. At the moment, my contract is a "probation" until end of February, but will then be extended to the end of the Project. I started last Wednesday, and the people are really nice and I'm settling in really well.

The only bad thing is that it's located at the Gabba (in the building above the Cricket Ground) so is 2 buses each way. I'm being paid the same as I was at Trace, but will likely get a payrise at the end of February.

I'm learning a lot, and will be doing a course on SAP so will be another plus for my resume.

On the other front, my mother is in plaster, and scooting around her house on her office chair. How did that happen? Well, on 31 Deccember, as we were unpacking the car at my place (after the drive down from Mackay the previous day) , she tripped out of my front door, and broke her foot in 3 places.

The third place - in her ankle - was only found last week after she had an MRI on her foot. So, is in plaster until 14 February when they check it again. Means she can't work until she can get around again, so is a good thing I'm working so that I can help her out with her bills - after I get mine back under control again!

job; work; family
