lectures

So for a couple days now I have been entertaining the idea of lecturing for Software Architecture. The idea really freaks me out and I'm 100% nervous about standing in front of 50 students talking about anything. They each pay like $2000 to take the course so I would be responsible for $100,000 worth of education each month. Thats .. holy shit it's ( Read more... )

you know what:

you could easily turn this into a slacker position too. all you need to do is prepare on semester worth of work/ then slightly modify it every new semester.

but once you get past that first semester, it's pretty much smooth sailing.

go for it.

Zounds my friend. Zounds indeed. Hey man ain't no thing. I used to be deathly afraid of speaking in front of people like that. But in reality, I was always nervous because I didn't know what to say or talk about. So, when I felt confident enough about what I was going to say and such, I had no problem doing it. So ask yourself, do you know what your going over with these kids? If you do, its really not that bad. Add a little humor here and there and bam, your a made man. ;)

I suppose that is a large part of my fear. I don't know the material as well as I need to at this point and so my confidence level suffers. But I suppose that will come in time. Up until now all I learned of the class is what I needed to get by as a labbie, as I have never actually taken the class.

The idea that you are a bit intimidated by speaking in front of these students means you are near perfect for the job. You are not some ivory tower researcher, nor some rock-star game jock who doesn't give a flip about the job. You've been through the same trials as your students, you know their plight intimately well, and you will be nothing short of accessible to them when they come to you seeking knowledge.

I think I had Mike Barnoske in his first class-- or maybe you did and we had him in his second. Anyway, he seemed nervous, a little dry, he didn't really have his thing down yet, you know? But he was more than happy to help, he was full of ideas and advice when asked, and that made all the difference. I remember him fondly for that reason. I'm sure you will be the same, if not better.

Yeah part of my intimidation comes from my respect for the creative genius of these students and wondering if I will meet their expectations as a teacher.

i don't imagine you'd be offered the position if you weren't qualified for it :) probably normal to have such pre-jitters, once you started teaching, you'd prolly find a good groove
