File formats meet mad science

May 05, 2016 07:58

I don't usually post links here to my blog, "Mad File Format Science," but I had so much fun writing about DNA storage that I wanted to mention it here. When you're talking about optically reading DNA encoded in base 3, fluorescent parity nucleotides, and zettabytes in the size of a sugar cube, that's mad science at its best.

Why base 3 and not base 4? You'll have to read the article I link to, from Microsoft and the University of Washington.

While entering the article in WordPress, I noticed that Firefox's spell checker knows the singular "zettabyte" but not the plural. They'll have to fix that to keep up with advances in storage.

The primary domain for the blog is now madfileformatscience.garymcgath.com.
