Day Twenty-two: Favourite book you own
What the hell kind of question is that? Which book would I save if the house was on fire, or something? I don't think I have any books that are irreplaceable/autographed/gifts from loved ones who are no longer with me, etc. I'd be pretty pissed if there was a fire and I lost all my books, but then who wouldn't?
So. Favourite book I own that I haven't have already mentioned in the previous twenty-one days. Would have to be. To Kill A Mockingbird (sorry, I really tried to be original, but my brain obviously isn't up to the task). One particular copy - the annotated (well, the page numbers are circled in pencil to aid my memory - that's the librarian's reluctant approach to defacing printed matter, and another reason why the Kindle is such a fantastic invention), battered, soft-covered, creased-spined, well-read first copy I ever bought, with the orange sketch of a bird on a black cover (William Heinemann, I think). I also have the swanky 50th anniversary hardback and a paperback from the 1960s with Gregory Peck on the cover, but my tatty old 'reading copy' has seen the most active service. I'm so anal about books that my library could be for display purposes only - DON'T dog ear pages, DON'T break the spine, OH NO, THERE'S A CREASE ON THE COVER! - but this one can wear every last battle scar with pride.
