Daphne Du Maurier
Well, one of my favourite writers, anyway! Really, I only love her for Rebecca, but The Glass Blowers (about Du Maurier's French ancestors) is well written, and I quite enjoyed My Cousin Rachel (Rebecca in another guise) and Jamaica Inn, too. (Frenchman's Creek is the worst kind of romancelandia tosh, however.) I really should get around to reading more of her work, including short stories like The Birds, but just for writing the gothic masterpiece that is Rebecca - I salute you, Daphne Du Maurier.
