Day five: A book that makes you happy
Emma by Jane Austen
Well, that's no surprise! I love the familiarity and sense of community in Austen's books, but especially in Emma, as the entire story takes place in Highbury (and Emma's imagination). Although sparse with background detail, Austen builds up such an impression of the small Surrey village through the eyes of her characters, that we can 'see' Hartfield and Donwell, and know where to find Randalls and Mrs Goddard's school and (how to avoid) Miss Bates. Also, the story takes place over the course of a year, so there is the cosiness and festivity of a traditional Christmas and the heat and laziness of summer days. I love to lose myself in novels, but Emma is the best escape from reality I have found yet!
