Drabble Fic - The Winchester Motto (14.16)
Title: The Winchester Motto
Summary: 14.16 Drabble. "When we were kids, how many times did we tell Dad that we were fine, just to make him happy?"

The Winchester Motto
Dad has a big duffel bag, and Sam knows that means he's staying away longer than he usually does.
“Watch out for your brother, Dean.”
Sam thinks Dean looks scared for minute, but he must be wrong because then Dean's smiling big and wide.
“We'll be fine. How much trouble can this little squirt get into anyway?!”
“We're fine, Sir. OK. Yes. We'll see you in a few days.” Dean hangs up the phone, and pours a bowl of cereal for Sam.
“Don't you want any?” Sam says, shoveling an overflowing spoonful into his mouth, milk dribbling down his chin.
Dean shakes him head. “I'm fine, Sammy.”
Sam's never seen Dad drive this fast before. “You OK, son?”
Sam can't push down on the old flannel shirt covering Dean’s leg any harder, and blood is still bubbling through his fingers.
Dean looks so pale, his eyes barely open. “I'm fine. It's just a little scrape.”
“What did the school say?”
Even from behind the closed bedroom door where Sam's been bed-ridden for the last few days, he can tell that Dad's mad; even if he's trying not to be.
“It's fine. I took care of it.”
“Dean-”
“I told them that he fell out of tree, and they bought it. So, don't worry about it. Everything's fine.”
They skip town that night.
“You got something to say to me, Sam?”
Yes, Sam's got plenty to say. Dean still has a concussion, Sam's doing well at school; even has a few friends, and the place they're staying in is actually nice. He doesn't want to leave.
But then Dean flicks his gaze at Sam, his face still black and blue, and Sam doesn't even think. The words just flow right out of him.
“No, Sir. Everything's fine.”
A/N: I'm so far behind with my watching and my drabbles, but I'm determined to catch up. After the run of stunning episodes, this fell a little flat for me, but there were still lots of moments to enjoy. As soon as I heard Sam say this line in the episode, I knew I had to drabble it!
