So I was watching AE AMVs to try and get a grasp on Atem. He's always been the character I find most intimidating to write, so really looking into him has been an interesting experience. Fic will hopefully come of this, if not also an RP account. We'll see.
Anyway, I was watching the scene where Atem/YnY strides into the afterlife with all his friends and family waiting for him. And I'm sure this has been pointed out by other people, but....Akhenaden is there.
Akhenaden is there. The man who created the Millennium Items and contracted with Zorc, nearly bringing ruin upon the world. I really love Akhenaden as a character, I think he's the most nuanced and interesting Item Priest (with his son a close second), but I am still kind of "wut".
He's there in the manga too. Both times "reborn" in his younger form, alongside his elder brother, who looks to be the same age he was when Atem was a kidlet. Though who's to say how they "appear" to Atem is based on how they want to appear vs. how Atem expects them to look, since aside from the two brothers everyone's the ages they were when Atem dies. Takahashi wasn't considering it, I don't think.
It's unclear how much of AE afterlife philosophy Takahashi subscribed to, either - certainly not the part about wanting an intact body, considering that YnB's little Game splits Akhenaden's mummy down the middle by the end of it - but wow. The right rituals really could put you in all the best places, no matter what you did.
Okay, I kid. I don't think Takahashi meant to imply anything about how Akhenaden was buried. It's a nice gesture to have even him waiting for his Pharaoh, since he was a nuanced villain and all that. I am less "wut" now and more "pffff". But now I am thinking about what Set might have done with the body - at the very least it was mummified - and where Thief King might have ended up, and -
Well. Before being reborn Papyrus doesn't really have a fulfilling afterlife. I have a piece I want to write where it's her asserting the Negative Confessions, except she turns them all positive. I have committed this sin, I have committed that sin, etc. Becoming united with Diabound in Ryoko three thousand years later is her "peace at last".
