Since everyone is doing it, and it is my favorite night of the year...I thought I would mention my opinions about the Oscars this year.
First of all, how awesome is it that Jon Stewart is hosting? I think he's a perfect choice for this year. He's also playing right to his crowd...I hope he does well.
This is also one of the very few years that I haven't seen that many of the movies nominated. Here are my best guesses though:
Supporting Actor: I really would like Jake Gyllenhaal to win. His performance just broke my heart, he made Jack so earnest with his heart on his sleeve. Paul Giamatti was wonderful in Cinderella Man, but I doubt he would win. I think George has got it.
Lead Actor: Walk the Line was, in my opinion, one of the best movies of the past year, and one of my favorites. Joaquin just became Johnny Cash. He was really amazing, I hope he is the winner. Heath was good, but I don't think he will win this one. I'm thinking the one to get this one will be Phillip Seymour Hoffman.
Supporting Actress: THIS is a tough one. Michelle Williams (who sadly hasn't won anything yet for her Brokeback performance) probably won't win. Rachel Weisz - I just watched The Constant Gardener - not that impressed with the movie, or Rachel's performance. If anyone should get recognition for that movie it should be Ralph Fiennes. Catherine Keener - I love her in everything, but she is constantly overlooked. I LOVED Amy Adams in Junebug - I think she should win. Rachel probably will.
Lead Actress: Reese was good, but I don't know if she will win. The past awards were split between Reese and Felicity...so it's hard to say which way the academy will go. From what I've seen of Keira's performance (still waiting to see P&P) she might be the dark horse. Also - Judi Dench once won for a tiny itty bitty scene in Elizabeth. This one is a tough call as usual.
Best Director: As usual, Ang Lee comes through. Brokeback was a beautifully directed movie. The way Ang sees things put together is truly a talent. George Clooney (from the parts I've seen) did an incredible job directing Good Night and Good Luck, and probably deserves the award as much as Ang, but if anything, they'll give George supporting.
Original Screenplay: I think either Good Night and Good Luck or Crash maybe? It's the only category that I haven't seen any of the nominated films.
Adapted Screenplay: Brokeback will win, I think. Taking that short story and filling it out so well, while still retaining the power of the smaller story was a feat in itself. They deserve it.
Best Picture: I have only seen Brokeback Mountain, but I do think that will win. The other 4 are on my Netflix list, but I won't get anywhere near them until well into March. :( I think Brokeback will win though. The academy likes epic sweeping dramas.
This is an interesting year for the Oscars. There isn't one movie - like Titanic or Lord of the Rings - that will totally sweep the major categories. I like when it isn't so predictable.
Side note: I'm watching LOST right now, HOLY CRAP.
