Yes, that's 'Part 1', not the latest/last HP movie. I move slowly ( Read more... )

Having now seen DH Part 2 - about 24 hours ago - I can say that agree with basically everything you say. :-)

I hated how Harry tried to make Hermione feel guilty for saving his life breaking his wand in the book, so I applaud the film folk making the lad more loveable in their movieverse. Triple the applause for his trying to comfort her with THE DANCE rather than callously leave her to cry herself to sleep over Won Won's betrayal.

though I question the need for wand to be broken in the movie

YES! His broken wand didn't appear at all in Part 2, did it? He certainly didn't try to fix it at the end. Slack writing on their part, I agree.

Part 1 however was certainly better than 2. It had more room to breathe and character moments for Harry and Hermione and even Ron.

That's an interesting way of looking at the first half of DH. I tend to concentrate on how boring and lifeless it was, given Rowling's writing, but you're right, the flip side is the greater 'room to breathe and character moments' in the movieverse. Neat. I'm just glad the film people USED that space to improve on the book in that respect.

I know that Part 2 had only one real 'Harry/Hermione' moment, versus the several of part 1, but the scene that we (H/Hr fans) did get in the last movie was a real doozy. That "I'll go with you" scene just *shines*, it's got heaps of H/Hr megawattage.

Part 2 felt like them going through the motions to get to the end.

Goodness, that's *exactly* how I felt in the 'calm' passages between the full-on fighting. I think there were two sequences in the movie where the war was raging, and the action, the magical special effects, quite had me engaged. But then every time they'd cut back to a canon Harry passage - Harry talking to the Gray lady (which was a nice innovative piece at first), Harry with Dumbledore, etc - where I almost consciously felt things *slow down* and get back into line with Rowling's prose. 'Going through the motions' as you say.
