Yes, that's 'Part 1', not the latest/last HP movie. I move slowly ( Read more... )

Ha! I knew you'd have great things to say about that movie! I do like your analysis of THE DANCE, and in spite of my lack of fangurl chills for it, I still have to thank the movie producers/writers/directors for putting that in there. It really does solidify the whole idea that they *should've* and *could've* but just didn't. None of the movies still explain why Hermione would ever choose Ron, and I would've thought that Ball of Light speech might have made the real Hermione puke with laughter, or cringe with disbelief, but whatever. I'll take RHr to HG any day, to be honest. HG is well and truly the bane of my HP existence.

I do enjoy the little corrections the movies make to the overall characterisation of the protagonists. Or the details that matter to us (but probably not to Rowling, for how else would that have gotten past her). I think THE DANCE might have gotten up there under protest from Jo, but since all the movie folks wanted it up there, she had no choice on the matter.

DH2 will have more corrections, if I'm reading the reviews correctly. If only for that, I look forward to it. I know I said I will never watch the HP movies in the theaters again, but I've been with this fandom for 10 years. I have to end it with a bang, and I shall do so in a movie theater, with my child, of whose first movie theater experience this will be. It's going to be epic. And yes, there will probably be tears.

Heh, thanks!

The movie folk - Yates and Heyman - certainly have pushed THE DANCE scene. I've seen them several times, in video or print interviews following the release of Part 1, actively coming out and supporting it. Yates said it was his favourite scene, I think. Oh, and Heyman did in the UK premiere, didn't he? He mentions THE DANCE, there's apparently an audience reaction, which he addresses, something like "... although some people didn't"? I forget his words, but I do know even just 4 days ago at 1am in the morning my time the top movie folk were pushing THE DANCE.

And good on 'em for inserting it. It added that 'real world' expectation that so many adults have for Harry/Herrmione (or any two attractive long-time best friends of opposite gender in a confined space and in danger). It took the hard reality of H/Hr, that's been staring everyone in the face for 6 movies, right to the very brink. Even I could see it, see that Hermione had a choice right there and then in Harry's arms.

DH2 will have more corrections, if I'm reading the reviews correctly.

Oh yeah. I haven't read the reviews but I've seen the trailers and other snippets. It *looks* like they've jettisoned pretty much the core of Harry's reading-the-small-print-of-wand-lore-that-was-invented-two-seconds-ago-just-for-me victory over Voldemort. That and the whole dreary monologue would never have worked in the movie. It didn't in the book. I love the canon corrections.

I have to end it with a bang, and I shall do so in a movie theater, with my child, of whose first movie theater experience this will be.

Yeah, go for it! Rowling proved to be a bad author and the series a literary failure, but the whole darn thing, this crazy fandom, it's been an amazing experience for us all. We're still allowed to enjoy the overall sensation, of being part of this huge group fad, even if we think the canon ended up a failure. :-)
