What I have learned this weekend, food-related edition

Jan 11, 2009 09:53

1. Vegan bacon (at least the kind available here), when fried, acquires the consistency of cardboard. It tastes like vaguely smoky cardboard. I'm glad I'm not vegan, because real bacon is the best thing on earth.

2. The horrible Coke Soup Experiment taught me NOTHING, clearly, because I'm serving Black Bean Espresso Chili tonight. Maybe this could be my project for 2009 - 52 ways to screw up black beans.

3. Much like lentils, beans will ALWAYS boil over. Yes, even when you're standing RIGHT THERE.

4. My mysterious vodka/milk/chocolate project is progressing very very slowly. It only just started separating yesterday! And that's only a tiny little bit. I've been a bit freaked out about it actually. Like, it's milk! That's been standing there for three weeks (almost)! WHY WASN'T IT CURDLING? But now it is, maybe, a bit, so all is well. I still have no idea what to do with it once it's done.

5. Things not to say re: medicating your cat, pt 3: oh, the new medication is working out pretty well, he hasn't thrown up at all. (Pt 1: oh, he's easy to pill; Pt 2: oh, I found a failproof way to pill him after he stopped being easy to pill.)
