Happy Solstice

or, as I like to think of it, Tomorrow Will Be Better Than Today But Still Worse Than, For Example, Last Tuesday, And Lots Of Other Days That Were Pretty Sucky, Too Day.

I don't know why I imagined I would have time to relax and catch up on TV this weekend. I'm pretty much baking, cleaning, and cooking 24/7. Well, 20/4, as I sleep sometimes and plan to be done by Tuesday evening (here's hoping).

Lutefisk of the year: consumed! It was my first time making it, and I may get another serving at my grandmother's on Boxing Day, but she was threatening to cut this delicacy as parts of the family do not Do fish. Which is a silly objection, because lutefisk doesn't even taste fishy. It doesn't taste of much of anything once you're finished mushing it with potatoes and béchamel sauce and allspice and mustard and clarified butter and canned peas. (I know Norwegians serve it with bacon and as with anything involving bacon I am intrigued, but I only have four burners on my stove so potatoes + fish + sauce + peas it is.) It kind of stinks, though, and so does my house. However, it was still worth it, as smell is a wonderfully adaptable sense and so you kind of don't notice unless you've been outdoors and come back in and I don't have time to leave the house because I'm baking five billion cookies. PROBLEM SOLVED. (I really really hope my cookies won't stink of lutefisk, though.)

Anyway, it was yummy, like anything involving large quantities of potatoes, white sauce and butter tend to be.

And now I'm taking a nap and then there are more cookies to be baked. And tomorrow the sun will set at 15:23 instead of 15:22. PROGRESS. Also it might snow then, although probably not since they're also promising +3°C. UGH.

food, christmas
