Cherries (Life is not a bowl)

A while back when I had a job where I had to travel, I remember having a particularly bad day. Gloomy and cold, gray and misty - the weather and how I felt. So I took public transport to get onto other public transport and went to one of the finer grocery shops. In the fruit section the bing cherries called out to me. They were outrageously expensive and they had no business being in a grocery store in such a cold and depressing place.

I bought them. And I remember the anticipation I felt traveling back to my hotel with this precious cargo. It was decadent.

Tonight I ran into an acquaintance - I've only really met her a couple of times, but we seemed to quickly realize we are kindred souls. She's a traveler and having walked in her shoes, I understood her. You just haven't lived until you've had to call a plumber and explain how urgently you need someone there right this minute... in a language you don't really speak. I happened to catch her on her last night in town and she's off tomorrow with passport and visa in hand. I envy her a little.

After we parted ways (and exchanged email addresses) I stopped to pick up some groceries. The bing cherries are in and they're pretty expensive. I bought some and they taste oh so sweet.

cherries, travel
