3rd Fairytale [audio]

[The comm clicks on, but the voice that comes through is quiet, as if Attika has her back to it. Which she does--she's pacing in her room and her voice rises and drops in volume as she comes closer to and walks away from the comm again.]

Back home--it's funny to say that. Back home.

Back home, we have a story abou--oh!

Oops. Oh. Let me see...

Yes, that's better. Much better.

[She pauses to clear her throat, much more audible now that she's not standing several feet away from the comm.]

Um...Oh! Yes. We have a story, back...back where I'm from, about a little girl who gets lost in the woods. She was exploring, and gets distracted by little flowers, and while she is picking the flowers, a wolf comes along and changes the path.

Instead of following the path home, the poor child gets lost deeper and deeper in the woods, until she can't find her way home. Home to...Oh, no, her way to her grandmother's house. She can't find her way to her grandmother's house, because the wolf changed the path. She does find her way at last but the wolf is--the wolf is coming, and she and her grandmother can't defend themselves. It's much too large and too vicious.

The wolf eats her poor grandmother, and is about to eat her, too, when fortunately a...a lumberjack? A woodsman, I suppose, but woodsman sounds funny to me. Lumberjack, too, but--oh! I'm sorry, I'm getting sidetracked.

A woodsman comes along--I suppose I'll say that--and kills the wolf, saving the little girl. And together they cut it open and pull out the grandmother and save her, too.

I...I think there was a moral to the story once, but now it's only told as a fairytale.

[She goes quiet for a moment, starting to pace again. Her footsteps are faint, but audible. Several quick steps. A pause. Several more quick steps. She stops with a faint "ah!" as if she's just gotten a really good idea.]

Are there stories like that where any of you are from?

mother goose was a lie, possibly a little crazy, !audio, not all those who wander are lost
