There is a character in George Orwell’s Animal Farm named Boxer. He’s a draft horse, strong and dedicated. Hi motto is “I will work harder”. When he splits his hoof, the pigs sell him to the glue factory, while telling the other animals that they sent Boxer to a hospital to recover, where he died later.
There are days that I feel like Boxer. No matter what needs doing, I will do it. I stay until my work is done, not when the minute hand hits the 12. I don’t skate out of tasks, and when no one else will volunteer, I usually step up. Not always with the best attitude, but I’m working to repair that. No one likes anyone who does things without grace. These students I’m with are all good kids, but not exactly driven, work-wise. So why is it I still wind up with the lion’s share of responsibility and work?
I’m tired. I work 7 days a week, I don’t slack and I don’t shirk. I am Boxer. Here’s hoping I don’t get sold to the glue factory for my troubles.
