Determination

Rai sat in the stool picking at her food lightly.  Her thoughts were elsewhere tonight and so she felt little hunger.  Esras was sitting next to her; he towered over her even when they were sitting.  His ragged hat was seated on the empty stool next to him, his worn dress coat still sat snug to his thin frame.  Unlike her he happily ate up everything in front of him with gusto.

“Moping isn’t going to help your situation, and it certainly doesn’t help me and my business m’dear” he said.  “I understand that this, what was his name, Kevin situation is bothering you but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying this amazing meal.”  He said between gulps.  Rai smiled at him lightly and then attempted to eat a bit.

A lot had happened to her in the past few months, some people would be overwhelmed, but she tried hard to deal with each situation as it came up.  Now that her new job was in order she decided to focus on her older life, the one left in as tattered a state as Esras’ top hat.

“I just don’t know what to do, or if I can even do anything at this point.  It just feels as though things have twisted too far, past the point of no return” she said with a sigh, pushing her food away.  Esras glanced over at her and then grabbed her discarded plate for himself.

“Look, all this emotional baggage that you are carrying about Kevin and the others is no good.  I am ordering you as your boss to take care of it.  It is bad enough that I have to deal with that Odran fellow of yours, which by the way I still want you to take care of, I don’t want this other ‘normal life’ stuff to disrupt things.”  By the end he had paused in his eating to face her, his clear otherworldly eyes pierced her soul making her feel calm.  He stared a moment longer and then nodded before going back to eating.

Rai felt more relaxed about the situation, she had learned to be stronger in the past few months thanks to his trials, so she should deal with this situation at least with the same effort.

“You’re right; I’ll take care of this with a level head.  At least I can say I tried if things still don’t work out” she said looking at the ceiling with new determination.  Esras made some affirmation next to her but otherwise remained quite.  “As for Odran, I think I am going to wait a bit yet” she said with a smug smile, taking back her plate of food.  Ignoring his shocked expression she began to eat happily.
