Pennies from Heaven

I've just had a rather warm shower.

No. Wait. You don't understand. This is a big deal for me right now.

For the last week our water heater has been on the fritz. The pilot light keeps putting its self out. I've been making trips to the attic (as have my housemates) multiple times a day to relight the pilot. It's the last thing I do before I go to bed and the first thing I do in the morning. My usual hot showers and weekly boiling hot baths have been replaced by cold to lukewarm showers and sponge baths in the hall bathroom sink, supplied with water boiled on the stove. Personal hygiene has been a daily bout of oaths forced through chattering teeth punctuated by angry growls and vulpine barks of venomous loathing.

So. This warm shower.

Waggling my fingers under the shower head and finding warmth there Above My Own Body Temperature was deeply exciting. I scampered to put my bathrobe in the dryer, kicked off my pajamas and scurried under the water like a river otter discovering a brand new waterfall. As the heat soaked into my hair and shoulders my breath caught in my throat and I cooed sweet nothings to the water heater gods, thanking them for their protection and bounty. I almost teared up. I've had first kisses that didn't compare to the awesomeness of this. Finally washing my hair in warm water after a week of disappointing temperatures has strengthened my will to live.

It's not fixed yet. I'll need to talk to our landlord again today, but holy Moses. I've seen the light at the end of the tunnel and it is Not, indeed, an oncoming train.
