The genre readers questionnaire
Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror?
For the last time, I DON'T DO HORROR. Usually Sci-Fi, since I enjoy the mind tweak and trying to figure out how plausible the scenario is.
Hardback or Trade Paperback or Mass Market Paperback?
Honestly, what I can get. I love hardcover, but not all books come hardcover nor can I afford them. Older books are oddly sized anyways. This is why I have more than 5 bookcases and WAY too many books.
Heinlein or Asimov?
I'm leaning towards Asimov, but honestly I'd have to say Stephen R. Donaldson or Dafydd ab Hugh.
Amazon (online) or Brick and Mortar?
BRICK AND MORTAR! I like to peruse the shelves, touch the books and start reading on the way home.
Hitchhiker or Discworld?
*Cringe* Haven't gotten to read Discworld, so I vote for RED DWARF. :)
Bookmark or Dogear?
Depends on the book, its age and worth, as well as how collector I want to keep it. Research books for my writing I dogear and doodle in. Antique books of mine I take good care of.
Magazine: Asimov's Science Fiction or Fantasy & Science Fiction?
Fantasy and Science Fiction. Variety.
Alphabetize by author Alphabetize by title or random?
Ohh boy..you HAD to ask this question! Alphabetize by subject/genre, as well as age and size. By author is not as important as all books on a certain topic, etc being together and in height order.
Keep, Throw Away, or Sell?
I usually only buy what I want to keep, and then loan them to everyone else. When I do have some I no longer want/use, I am more prone to giving them away than anything else. I might have my little brother start selling some for me though.
Short story or novel?
Novel. Short stories always seem unfinished, piecemeal or chopped. The longer the novel the better (to a point)...I want to DISAPPEAR into the world, not visit.
Harry Potter or Lemony Snicket?
NEITHER. I echo Foo: DARK IS RISING ALL THE WAY. I had to replace my set when I hit high school b/c I damaged my original one so much. "Silver on the Tree" I used to carry in my back pocket.
Stop reading when tired or at chapter breaks?
When my eyes no longer stay open. I have been often found passed out with my book still open in my hand.
Buy or Borrow?
Depends on the book. This is why we like having friends who work for Barnes & Noble, etc.
Buying choice: Book Reviews, Recommendation or Browse?
Browse. I don't read much new fiction or sci-fi anymore; most of the books I go after are history or other research. Often costuming.
Lewis or Tolkien?
For which? Youth or adulthood?? LOL
Tolkien all the way; the first book I ever read was the Hobbit when I was about 4. Never went back. Lewis is enjoyable, especially Screwtape Letters, but Tolkien wins.
Hard SF or Space Opera?
Space Opera. I am a woman after all, and I like my sappy romance and melodrama! ("I love you!" "I know." OOOH.)
Collection (short stories by the same author) or Anthology (short stories by different authors)?
MM have to go with collection.
Hugo or Nebula?
Awards are merely pretty things on a book cover in my opinion. Neither.
Tidy ending or cliffhanger?
Depends, to a point. Tidy endings are nice, but cliffhangers allow for the "what if" for us budding writers out here, and also leaves it open for sequels.
Morning reading, Afternoon reading or Nighttime reading?
YES. I even read in the car.
Standalone or Series?
Standalone usually; I don't have to fret about affording the rest of the series!
Urban fantasy or high fantasy?
Depends; wasn't into fantasy until much later. I like high fantasy AND urban fantasy. Depends on the author, really. And my mood.
Favorite book of which nobody else has heard?
