Lauren Albert

Apr 25, 2008 19:47

Lauren Albert is a young, fresh, odd, folksy, esoteric, fun emerging illustrator who is finishing up her senior year at Moore College of Art and Design. I have been watching her art for a long time--probably close to four years--through her deviantart; and I have found her art consistently thought-provoking and quirky, for lack of a better term. Her folksy-homey approach to art is off-set by her vivid imagination: figures that stretch forever, humanoid sharks, shape-shifting eggs, a multitude of legs per person, etc. Her art is fantastical without falling into the void of 'fantasy art;' for this reason, I would only be able to classify Albert's art as magically realistic, to borrow a term usually reserved for literature. And indeed, Albert's art reminds the viewer of novels by Haruki Murakami and Gabriel Garcia-Marques: multi-layered like a Neutral Milk Hotel song; strange, but not so strange as to be completely unendearing; down-to-earth, though to an earth that is unfamiliar yet not without its own rationalities; and seductive in a way that is not entirely certain. Albert's art rings of a frankness that isn't quite frank but plenty easy on the eyes.
