Speak Cryptic
Speak Cryptic (real name Farizwan Fajari) is a 27-year-old Singaporean subliminal street artist whose work something like quirky cartoon confusion with a fresh hip-hop vibe. The graffiti aspect of Speak Cryptic's work can be seen in his distribution process which involves telephone-pole pasting. In this way, his art is interactive because people encounter the art in their day-to-day lives; in addition, much of Speak Cryptic's work features speech bubbles--which are usually ambiguous in message--which suggests the figures are actually speaking to the viewer. Speak Cryptic reminds the viewer written language is in itself a form of art and the act of writing is actually the act of drawing; this makes it acceptable for something as commonly cartoonish as speech bubbles to be regarded as art. In this way, Speak Cryptic's art can be seen as an homage to the pop art of Lichtenstein, but Speak Cryptic's art is less reproduction and more cutting-edge nonsense that reminds me of Tao Lin's novel Eeeee Eee Eeee. Speak Cryptic makes visual puns and much of these puns are literal to the point of arbitrariness. The viewer thus receives the sensation of viewing a doodle by a bored, unconventional youth whose art is anything but boring.
