Alexander

I have a lot of weird pseudomystic feelings about Alexander--that's the summon Alexander from Final Fantasy, the big fuckoff Holy element castle dude--that I've developed over the past few months so I kind of want to get those down on paper for a second.

  • Alexander is big and powerful and I like how inhuman he is. He really does seem just like a huge, barely sentient force that can be evoked for power's sake, which makes him feel more 'genuine' than, like, the FF depictions of Shiva or Ifrit or Bahamut. He's also less appropriative as far as I can tell, which is a plus.
  • Alexander strikes me as a Christian reference or at least had a lot of Christian imagery associated with him (eg the multiple wings in ff9), but I think I'd be more comfortable being connected with him in a more Woolseyfied, less explicitly religious sense--like, if he'a a Holy elemental, that can mean a lot of things, but since I perceive him as being pretty amoral (kinda Lawful Neutral), it'd make more sense to me to evoke the renamed Pearl spell from the older localized FF games instead. It's that kind of feeling: a certain kind of power/aesthetic without having to necessarily align with established religions, or whatever.
  • I love a big castle creature. So all encompassing and structured. It's like he's the embodiment of pure order and lawfulness, but it's up to humans to decide how to use that order and structure, because AS WE AMERICANS KNOW WELL, law and order can be sooo easily manipulated for good or for ill. Instead of a "force of nature," Alexander feels to me like a "force of mankind."
  • That resonates with me a lot because I have ADD and sometimes it's hard to keep things in order, mentally or physically. I think maybe evoking/working with Alexander might be able to help me in these ways. I'll think on this more.
