"A girl ought to have a sense of humor, that's one thing you really need for sure"

Bar none, the best Rachel/Jesse fic out there. I hardly ever rec fics, but this was written in a way that is just so lovely, that I had to share it. It's by marketchippie and it's called a season ticket on a one way ride

find it at her journal here.

in other news, as you might see from my previous entry I watched memoirs of a geisha last night for the first time and really liked it!! I absolutely adored the book, and so I was kind of scared for the movie.

was it perfect? No - there were lots of plot changes (although I thought these were okay because they were done to speed things along and in the end didn't really change much) and I actually thought that zhang ziyi who was playing the lead role of sayuri was the weakest link. But there were some really fantastic things about this film. The book itself opens up a world to you full of mystery and sadness and also, for the main character, hope - but it is a world presented in a visual style. Colours, fabrics, make-up, costumes...geisha's are costumed dolls who dance and sing and perform all made up to look perfect and be perfect, and therefore the book is a very lush and sensual, textured read. And the movie itself was gorgeous in this way, it was just visually stunning and really brought that world to life. I adored all the secondary actors, especially Li Gong as Hatsumomo and Suzuka Ohgo, the little girl who played the younger Sayuri. Also equally impressive was john williams' breathtaking score, which was nominated for an oscar and should have won!!

lastly, what I loved best about the movie (and this might seem kind of silly) was the narraration - it made the film. The book is narrated by sayuri telling us her story, and this woman, whoever she is, had a voice that was so perfect for this I could have cried. The very last scene of the film is so breathtaking because of the words of the narrator, and I transcribed it yesterday in my post. Here is the last part of the film with the narration playing over the scene of young Sayuri running through the orange poles to the temple. The score here is right now one of my favourite things in the world. Sometimes you find scenes in movies that just hit you the right way, and for me, this last scene is one of them. The narration begins at 4:05. Listen to the swell of music that plays, starting at around 4:30.
