Thirteen years and fourteen days ago I went into the Antioch Animal Shelter to peruse the selection as I had several times before. My dad has an inexplicable dislike of Labradors, and I have the same feelings towards Pitt-Bulls; unfortunately, given Antioch's socioeconomics, that is what they had in spades. On that day, however, someone had that morning surrendered a 4-month old "Terrier-Beagle-Mix" that was "too big." He looked pensive at his loud, new surroundings and utterly adorable. I asked if I could meet him. A volunteer led us to a room where the dog would be let off leash to mix and mingle. My sister and mother sat in the two chairs, while I sat on the ground to say, "Hello." The dog walked up to me and plopped himself in my lap; he had my heart on the spot. And had it unwaveringly to this day. Last September he was diagnosed with cancer. He outlived the doctor's estimates, but lately his little body couldn't fight it any more. After giving my family and me a wonderful thirteen years and fourteen days it was time; he went peacefully.
Today I said good-bye to a silly, gentle soul who was one of the greatest positive forces in my life. He will be greatly missed.
