I just find it so scary that there are people who think they can legally take things away from other people. Innocent people. Why do we think we can decide what's right for someone else? Why do we think we need to change people who aren't hurting anyone? Why does one group of people decide what everyone else should do?
We're still fighting over civil rights, and I don't care what we call it. Gay rights, women's rights, animal rights, I don't care. It's still civil rights. The civil rights movement cannot and will not be over until we have real rights for everyone. Real equal rights. Don't tell me what's American as you try to take things away from people who never wanted anything but freedom. I'll tell you what American is. American is every person born equal. American is freedom to think and speak as you choose. American is not having to be afraid of the government. American is feeling safe in your own skin. American is believing what you want to believe. American is giving, not taking.
The moment we can let someone decide that one type of person has fewer rights than another, we are all in danger. It's just them, this time. Well, when Hitler came for the gypsies, I did nothing because I was not a gypsy. And when Hitler came for the Jews, I did nothing because I was not a Jew. And when Hitler came for me, nobody did anything. It doesn't matter who we're taking rights away from. When anyone loses their rights, everyone is in danger of losing their rights.
Jerry Falwell died yesterday. I knew he was a horrible monster of a man, but I did not realize the extent to which he tried to endanger everyone in America. And just because he's dead doesn't mean the danger is gone. He's invigorated so many to believe that they are for some reason superior. What's next? Nothing but blonde-hair and blue-eyed people? Please take the time to read
this article from the New York Times. It's so important that we know what we're up against so that we can fight it. And it's so scary what these people think they can get away with. And it's even scarier because they are getting away with it. We've seen this happen before. And any of these conservatives would have your balls in a leather strap in some Supreme Courthouse for saying these things, but they're true. I'm saying these things because I love what our country stands for, and I don't want to see that get taken away. The article mentions how Falwell hardly seemed like a bad-guy when he spoke. He seemed "as dangerous as the corner grocer," so says the article. Iago made Othello fall by being friendly. Until the last scene of the play, Othello thought Iago was his best friend, his only friend. Iago seemed to be the only one who cared enough to tell Othello the truth, and all the while he was spinning a web of lies for Othello's downfall. The bad guys will not wear ugly masks so that you can tell who they are.
Please, I beg you all, read this. It's so important that we all educate ourselves, otherwise we will let them step all over us. We will let them take our rights away. And they may not be attacking you today or tomorrow, but who will be there to help when they do attack you? Don't give them the power to take anything away from anything. We need to show them what real Americans are like. We were founded by a group of men who would not allow themselves to be stepped on. We can't start letting them step on us now.
