If it's the cemetery I'm thinking of, those hills would be deadly. Are you planning on biking those hills? Or walking the bike to the top and coasting down (which would be my plan!)
Yeah, it has some good hills but it's no worse than going up 44th street (which I did today--had to stop a few times, though, and I was in "granny gear") or the route near the zoo. THAT one is a killer, especially in the heat with all the animal poo smells in the air. Ewww!
Or the hills in Oakland. I walk up them every day (multiple times).
That's the one. Even when I was in shape and rode a bike all the time (teenager), I had trouble with hills. My goal was to make it up my hill without stopping, I got 3/4 of the way and was done. The best part was always coming back down. It's a wonder I was never hit by a car.
And I think I would find a cemetery very peaceful too... I used to love taking a walk in the one near where we used to live. Lots of historical and beautiful stones there... and a feeling of just... time. It was really a cool place.
I love looking at the names on the tombstones. And seeing how they're arranged, like a big monument with the family name on it, then all the family members' stones scattered around it. (and I've noticed moste tombstones are set to face the roads/walkways--I've only seen one grouping where all the smaller stones faced the big one).
But my favorites are the tombs that are situated so they look like they go right into the hillside. Most of them are really old and mossy. Some even have little tree-lets growing on the roofs.
I'm trying to imagine your cemetery. I couldn't imagine cycling in any of the cemeteries in my home town (well I could, but it wouldn't be much of a cycle). I'm also envious of the deer, wow! I've spotted the occasional squirrel and someone sleeping under a tree in the one at the top of my road but never a deer. However, I'm omitting to mention the most important bit.
CONGRATULATIONS. A fully fledged bike commuter. Really brilliant. (And your wife, shepherding you on your inaugural commute, is just a sweetie. I bet he is so proud of you - as you should be/are of you.)
The cemetery is HUGE (not the biggest around here, but close). It's sprawling and hilly but a lot of the paved parts are full of holes. I tried taking a different route through yesterday and I had to get off because the "road" was too bad for the bike (and I felt like I'd do a header and kill myself). So I guess I'll just stick to the main road (which is very smooth and all downhill to my neighborhood, a bonus!).
I see squirrels and chipmunks and groundhogs all the time along with the deer (and some wild turkeys, too). And I got a treat in the form of a hawk, hanging out on the top of a head stone (and I was only the street's width away from it--it just turned its head to keep an eye on me but really didn't think me much of a threat).
I'm pretty sure my wife is pleased with my decision to commute. He's not the type to make a big fuss (no "good girl" stickers, darn it!). He's more the "lead by example" type. Which worked!
