Trust

“If you don’t trust me I suggest you relieve me. Otherwise, leave me alone! I’ve got work to do, ma’am.”

And then, he hung up on her.

For a moment, Jen stared at her phone. For a moment, she was tempted to do exactly as DiNozzo suggested, pull him from the case and run the situation herself.

It was bad enough Jethro had gotten himself taken hostage, now she had to deal with his senior field agent’s attitude. Add that to the fact that their “enemy” was a fifteen-year-old kid, and it was enough to give her a serious headache.

For a moment, she wondered how DiNozzo had gotten to be senior field agent, if that was how he handled pressure from his superiors. With the exception of Ducky and Ziva, the people on Gibbs’s team now were still a complete mystery to Jen.

Abby, she supposed she could understand. As far as Jen could tell, there wasn’t anybody who didn’t like Abby She just had that sort of personality, and between the pigtails and her eternal optimism, Jen could see how Gibbs could feel protective of the girl.

McGee’s presence also made a certain amount of sense. Gibbs’s abhorrence for technology was well-known, so having a geek around that he could get to do that sort of thing for him was probably a sound strategy. And McGee was also shaping up to be a good field agent, one Gibbs apparently trusted.

As for DiNozzo… Most of the time, he seemed like an overgrown frat boy, barely serious for more than a few minutes at a time. But Jen’s own schedule kept her at the office late, and more than a few times, she had seen DiNozzo at his desk in the middle of the night, hard at work. And just now, he had taken charge of the scene, barking out orders and practically growling at her to-

Huh. Maybe she could understand what Jethro saw in him.

Jen took a deep breath.

As much as she would have liked to be back in the thick of things, Jen knew those days were behind her. She was the director of the entire agency now, and she had to let her people do their jobs.

She trusted Gibbs- she would just have to trust DiNozzo, too.

THE END
