Don't worry, I'll shut up after this

So my comment in response to the one who picked on me (see yesterday's post) was:
I never said any of it was right. And isn't that exactly the point ( Read more... )

XD Sorry. I'm just catching up on your posts since I haven't really been checking LJ that much lately, but I'm sorry to say that most of the internet is apparently just like that and not just about manga, but like everything.

In the aftermath of the protests from SOPA/PIPA, a lot of people had similar attitudes about their justification in protesting, which is sad and wrong.

We were protesting because the bills were written poorly by politicians that have no idea the extent of what the fuck they were writing was going to do. The protest wasn't about keeping piracy alive.

And bear in mind, that those bills were also backed by pretty much all major entertainment companies in the U.S. It's a noble cause and something I think is worth pursuing because people who make things, should be paid for their hard work and the fans enjoying them should give their money TOWARD that hard work.

That being said, the internet is *great* for sampling and helping people to decide if they love something. The only problem is that there also isn't enough legally free or affordable content to combat the need to pirate. Spotify and Netflix are two really great solutions to help alleviate that, but they don't do enough. For TV programs, movies, and anime Hulu, Crunchyroll, and Niconico.com are really awesome solutions as well, but they don't have everything that a person could possibly want to watch, so when something isn't available, people are going to find other means to watch it.

This week I'm an example of that because the wireless at the new place I moved to is kind of shitty. The signal barely reaches my room and I have to sit in a corner against my door with my laptop in order to get internet access. So then since I'm being sapped of my life's blood of internet access, I got bored and decided to use my phone's data plan to watch some stuff I'd been meaning to watch in bed and I finally got around to watching all of Code Geass in order cuz I'd only seen bits and pieces until now. I really like the series, but only the first season was available on Crunchyroll, which SUCKS because the first season ends in a huge cliffhanger and you just watch up to that point and then go "!#$@!#% OMG WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN?!" So then I spent the last two days hunting around for streaming sites just to finish the series in my mind. I really like the series though and it is on my long list of things I do actually want to buy and have in my collection. But see, I was only able to legally support HALF of the series. I see this as a problem. There's also this one show called Himitsu: The Revelation that I started years ago and never finished and it hasn't been licensed. It's a great series. If I want to finish watching this series, I need to scour the internet to find it. If I wanted to also buy it, I'd also have to scour the internet to find a way to import it from Japan and probably spend over $200 in the process. I'm also pretty sure most of the shows I really love, I would probably be willing to just shell out a few hundred bucks to get the Japanese version just because I like the Japanese packaging better. Id id for 1/3 of Yu Yu Hakusho already too, but those DVD Box sets are out of print now. =/ Now I'd have to find several hundred dollars and also import it via Amazon.co.jp. But you know, I have to be allowed to love something first in order to compel me to give up that kind of money and the internet is great for doing that. There just aren't enough legal ways of doing it.

Yup. That's it exactly. To decide if they love something. But it's what they do with that "love" afterwards that really counts though, so I hope more people will realize that too.

I hope people do realize that and I hope that in the future that there are better ways to monetize getting people to feel that "love" to prevent mooching.

Just the same though, there are a few series I'm really happy I didn't pay anything to watch because they were terrible and I was optimistic that it would get better, but it didn't. For instance, the 6 episode series of Saint Beast, which was an OVA I think before the TV series Tatsuhisa was on. That was terrible and I want those 3 hours of my life back. I didn't spend any money on it though, so I can't complain too much, but the fact that I was able to sample those 6 episodes to find out it was terrible and that I would probably horribly hate the TV series was enough to me to find that kind of circumstance a good use of downloading on the internet cuz I would have wanted a full refund if I had to pay money for that awful.
