:D Glad to make you flail because your mixes tend to do the same for me. Music is happiness and you have great taste; different takes and I love that you use songs that aren't straight off the Top 40 charts (because that gets tired and so much pop is so bad, but that's a different ramble for another day...). I did manage to get my hands on the Lana--and how AMAZING is that song? I just. No words. Except I love her! I still need the Carina though--I have an awful time finding her stuff and it sucks. Sendspace it is, yep.
Jack Off Jill: Yes, the added level of desperation and obsession is exactly what makes it such a truly stellar cover. <3
Will check out Luther when I have the chance to do so, it's on my list for later when I go a'visiting (and a'gorging on high speed internet). The Following... I don't even know where to begin aside from the fact it is, without a doubt, the best show I've seen in ages (that and Person of Interest). It totally blew me away in the pilot episode and has consistently done so ever since. It is twisted and dark and wrong in so many ways, yet at the same time there are some really weirdly beautiful moments within it and it will also break your heart at least once, maybe twice. Given the idea of the show--a cult of serial killers--you wouldn't think it could do any such thing, but one of the amazing things about the show is how it shows viewers the human side of these monsters; that not every killer out there is a soulless psychopath. So, for it to humanize the "bad guys" so well is one of the more disturbing aspects of the program--and also one of the best because it's the truth (and I don't think it's something many people are at all comfortable acknowledging). And of course the music is brilliant, Idk who's in charge of that aspect of the show, but I want to send them a card of thanks for making such excellent and fitting choices. A rec from the show that is a "must have" (I think): "Take Care of My Baby" - Dum Dum Girls. THAT SONG. GOD. *sniffle*
Awww! Again, making me blush, you are far too sweet. And oh God, Lana, LANA, moon of my life, my sun and stars, that woman is incredible, so yeah, you can expect to see much of her on upcomming mixes, but for now here is the Carina song since she's a bit harder to come by.
Fun fact, the Jack off Jill Lovesong cover was actually the first song on this mix.
Well, I believe Luther is currently on Netflix instant watch, so that'll make it a little easier for you. God that show sounds ... Jesus, absolutely amazing, I am definitely looking into now. Also so excited about this song rec! The Dum Dum Girls do AMAZING covers, so I'm really excited to hear their treatment of that, holy cow.
Got the Carina--thank you so much! It's as good as I hoped it would be. She's really a fabulous writer, that's what caught my attention from day one (and her awesome voice, of course).
Haha... After reading about Alice on Wikipedia, that makes perfect sense that you'd put the Jack Off Jill song on the mix first--I've not even seen the show and it feels like it ought to be her theme song. :D
I'll be sure to check Netflix when I have a chance then because I'm definitely wanting to see it; the characters sound wonderfully flawed and damaged--I love that in shows. Oh, do let me know what you think of The Following, I am itching to get your thoughts. I hope you fall obsessively in love with it and make many wonderful mixes like it. *koff* That song is really gorgeous and the arrangement is lovely. It's the first I've heard by Dum Dum Girls, but it won't be the last, although WOW at difficult to track down, harder than Carina even.
Another rec that's maybe a bit odd, but I thought was really incredible: There's a great cover of "Angel" (Massive Attack) done by Sepultura that I (re)discovered thanks to The Following. (I had the album ages ago, but lost it and sadly forgot about that track.) Talk about giving a new (and I think better, actually) spin on a pretty classic song. It's so sinister and ominous and creepy and GUH. LOVE.
You're welcome! Actually the next mix I'm putting out has a Carina Song on it also (and a Lana Del Rey). But yeah, I'm pretty smitten with her, I actually discovered her through Season 1 of American Horror Story.
Oh yeah, just wait until you want the show, and then you'll think that it is even more.
I think I just saw that The Following is all on Hulu Plus, which is awesome, so I think in the next month I'll be sitting down with it, and I'm sure, from what you've told me, that I'm going to completely adore it. And hey, I'm always up for a challenge as far as tracking down that song.
Oh my God, that sounds amazing too! That's going on my list of things to find as well.
I am looking forward to that then. :D It's always cool seeing what you come up with. Not to mention, you actually make cool cover art. Maybe it's just me, but have you ever seen a mix where the cover art is (A) terrible and (B) for the life of you, you cannot figure out what the "art" has to do with the mix (or the fic, if that's what inspired it)?
I am looking forward to watching Luther. Lol, I know what I'll be doing with my "summer vacation" (quotes because I am too old to actually have those).
Huzzah! The whole show is amazing, but episode 12 is mindblowing. It just... I love the characters and what happens in 1x12 is fucking amazing. I seriously finish every episode with a *bounceflail* "This show, omg, this show!" I do not do that with television shows, but this one... Yes.
Dum Dum Girls are proving to be a bastard to find much of anything by. I got "Take Care of My Baby" from a friend who was kind enough to rip it off YouTube for me. About the Sepultura: It's pure genius for a cover and off an album titled Roorback and/or alternately titled Revolusongs, so maybe that'll help. Just a note of caution: If you're not into metal as a rule, you may want to avoid the rest of their stuff. "Angel" is very toned down and low-key for that band. I like metal and they're really a great example of what real metal is (as opposed to the whiny ass mallcore stuff that's out there now). If you do like some heavier bands then allow me to rec Otep as well. It's a metal band with a very strong female lead, which is awesome... and she's also a damn good writer, which counts for a lot with me.
Off to catch up on Doctor Who now with a bit of trepidation; I am hearing some bad things about S7 since it came back from break. But I'm game, just hope I'm not too disappointed. *crosses fingers*
Aw, you're sweet. It's always such a huge confidence booster to here that my cover art is actually liked, so thank you so much for saying so, and oh lord, yes, I have seen those mixes, and they puzzle me to no end.
Wow, I think there is definitely a weekend marathoning of this show coming up in my future, and I am excited for it.
The DumDum Girls are a bit on the rare side, but I'm no stranger to having to get songs off youtube, so at least if that's what it comes down to in the song quest I got it covered. I definitely fluctuate, there are some things I listen to which are in the metal spectrum, although my tastes overall are not, so I will have to test the waters with them and see, because I might love them, who knows, my tastes are both weird and reeeeeally eclectic.
I'm enjoying the current season so far, I really love the new companion, most of last season made me really angry, but I like Clara and her dynamic with the doctor a lot, so I hope you like them too.
