I somehow didn't realize Who was starting up again until I saw one of my friends in the US express distress over losing power just as the premier came on. Whoops. Nevertheless, have seen it now!

-Hitler? Really show? Really? On the one hand, I enjoyed Team TARDIS's reactions to friggin' Hitler and was relieved that ultimately that wasn't really what the plot was about. On the other hand, Hitler, really?

-I think River's story makes less and less sense every time they reveal a new piece of it. Like, I was still waiting for an explanation as to why she and the Doctor were apparently going through their relationship linearly in opposite directions, but this episode seems to contradict the business of her first meeting a Doctor who knew all about her when she was little. Also, since we got the pseudo-time-lord reveal, I figured Melody/River was the kid in the astronaut suit who killed the Doctor, but if she killed him as a kid, why was she trying to kill him again later (in her time-line, earlier in his)? Wouldn't it have caused a paradox if she succeeded?

I don't know if Moffat has even more twists up his sleeve or if he's just making shit up as he goes and not being terribly consistent about it; hopefully it's the former, but I rather suspect it's the latter.

-Tiny Amy and Rory were kind of adorable, though I'm not entirely sure if the way they got together really makes sense given what their relationship seemed to be like when we saw them the first time in 5x1.

-Basically, I'm in an awkward place with the show right now where I still generally love the characters, but am kind of annoyed by the plots. I think I'd like it a bit better if there were less wibbly-wobbly series arcing going on, and more wacky single-episode adventures. I also definitely prefer Amy & Rory being Amy & Rory, rather than River's Mum & Dad. Meh. Shall have to see how the rest of the series goes.

Also, I guess Merlin will be back on sometime in the relatively near future? Thoughts on that behind the cut, including references to spoilers from various cast & crew interviews.

I can't say I'm particularly excited about it. Between the way things were left at the end of series 3, and what I've heard about series 4 so far, I get the distinct impression that pretty much everything I liked about the show in the first place is gone. (Uh, other than Bradley's face. And his hands. And his, you know, Bradley-ness.) Spoilers say more darkness and less lulz, and that Merlin's going to be even more isolated and withdrawn from everyone, which is the opposite of what I'd like to see happening. Arthur's still going to be painfully oblivious to everything, I seriously doubt Arthur/Gwen is going to stop being an OOC cliché-fest any time soon, I will be shocked if Gwen gets to do anything other than being pod-Arthur's pod-love-interest, we are not even going to talk about Morgana. All the stuff about how Merlin's ~so alone~ makes me fear that they won't do anything nice with his relationship with Gwaine, either. I get the impression that in Bradley's head, he's filming more or less the show I'd like to be watching, but I don't think that's the same as the show we'll actually see on screen.

So all that is rather disheartening. Current plan is to watch for the pretty and try not to care too much about the plot or characterisation, but we'll see how that goes. On the plus side, my expectations are so low that maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised somewhere along the way.

my feelings let me show you them, doctor who, merlin
