All I know is you're the nicest thing I've ever seen
I wish that we could see if we could be something
His body was stretched out on the bed with his hands folded together. He didn't want to appear too eager for his visitor. But inside he was getting jittery. Having no distinction in time made him more anxious. After all, how was he to know whether he was waiting a few minutes or a few hours? It all felt the same to him.
When Peter finally heard the click on his cell door his heart gave an excited little jump. He stayed stretched out, though, keeping from visibly showing how he felt. It was like a game the two of them were playing with each other. Peter was stubborn and fought her while Elle pushed at him. They never spoke the rules of their game out loud but both knew how it worked, and neither was going to lose willingly.
"Peter," Elle trilled out. "You're not sleeping, are you?" He could hear the disappointed tone in her voice and shifted on the bed, letting out a sleepy sigh. Peter heard footsteps and moments later Elle's face appeared in his vision. She smirked down at him. "Nice try," she said.
"Oh, hey, Elle," Peter greeted her casually. He sat up, swinging his legs over the side of the bed. "If I knew you were coming, I would've cleaned up." That was a joke they were beginning to share with each other and Peter knew Elle appreciated him for it.
"I'll forgive you this once," she said, smiling at him. "Medicine time." She held out the pills and a cup of water. Peter took the dose obediently and gave her the empty cup when he was done. "You take those down awfully fast," Elle remarked. "Eager to get rid of me?"
"Eager to get rid of the pills," Peter corrected her. He was implying but didn't outright say that he didn't want her to leave yet. It was hard to tell if she understood; her face gave away nothing. It was all a part of their game.
Now it was her turn to make a move and as Peter expected, it was a jolt of lightning passing from her fingers to his skin. He jerked a little at the sensation but grew so used to it by now it didn't bother him. But his flinch was enough to make Elle's face light up in delight. She kept insisting that one day he would grow to like those shocks. Of course she already enjoyed them so Peter was kind enough to not ruin her fun.
"I'll leave you to whatever you were doing," Elle said.
"You're leaving already?" Peter asked her, unable to completely stifle the disappointed tone in his voice. It was enough to catch Elle's attention. "I thought we could talk for a while," Peter continued. Elle smiled, promptly seating herself on his bed. Peter took a seat nearby without being right next to her.
Elle was his only link to the outside world. Aside from her father, she was the only person Peter saw since his explosion. Peter needed that human connection desperately.
Eventually Elle would leave and Peter was alone again. Elle was a huge puzzle for him. Peter couldn't be sure if she chose to visit him every day or if she did so because that was her assignment. He knew it was her goal to make him like her daily electrical jolts but he didn't know why. It made him wonder if she liked him as a person or as a plaything.
Peter stretched out on the bed again, letting his mind drift to Elle. He thought of her girlish smile, the way she lit up when she saw him. Peter honestly liked her and regretted that they had to meet this way. They would never have a chance for a real relationship. All they had was this invented game between them, and once there was a winner that would be the end.
