November 3.2

Don’t worry, it happens to everyone at some point.

“Uhh, hello?”

“Yes?” Peter glanced up at the voice to see his partner Hesam standing in front of him. The man did not look very happy. “Hey, Hesam. What’s up?”

“What’s up?” the other man repeated incredulously. “Dude, did you not see that hot girl check you out when we walked in?”

“Not… really,” Peter answered with a shrug of his shoulders. Hesam stared at him, disbelieving, but Peter just went back to his beer. He came in here to relax after his shift and since relaxing was so unusual for him Peter took every chance he could get.

“Peter, I’m saying this because I’m your friend and I care about you,” Hesam began slowly. “You need a girlfriend.” Peter just rolled his eyes. The two of them seemed to be having this conversation a lot. “The girl’s still here,” Hesam continued, grabbing Peter by the arm and pulling him off his chair. “Go talk to her.”

“Hesam--”

“Do it, man. Go.” Hesam gave him a little shove and since he wasn’t being given a choice in the matter he walked over to where the girl was sitting.

Hesam was right about her being pretty. How could Peter have not noticed that? She had dark hair brushing down to her shoulders, and when she noticed him approach she turned her head in such a way that her hair rippled.

“Hi,” Peter greeted her.

“Hi,” she answered back, flashing him a smile. Her eyes flickered over him thoughtfully. Peter swallowed and pushed his hair out of his face. Well, he talked to her. Now he didn’t know what to do. He was really out of practice. “Can I help you?” she asked when he kept standing there without saying anything else.

“Huh? Oh, sorry. My mind just went… blank for a minute there.”

“It’s all right,” the girl assured him with a chuckle. “I’ll consider that a compliment.” Another silence settled between them. “You want to sit down?”

“Um…” He knew the right answer was probably “yes” but he couldn’t seem to get it out.

“Or maybe buy me a drink?” she suggested kindly.

“I’ll go get it.” Peter was glad for a reason to walk away and go find Hesam. The way the man was looking at him told Peter his partner had been watching the whole time.

“Dude, you put new meaning to the phrase ‘crashing and burning’,” Hesam concluded.

“Oh, shut up,” Peter huffed. But he couldn’t be the only guy who failed at picking up girls at bars, right? He really hoped so.
