So, yeah. A cashier job and a pizza job. fun.
Ok i'm exaggerating. it's not that hard. Both are simple enough to do. cashier work is child's play. Something i've done quite well in the past, it's not the first cashier job, and i doubt at this moment in time it'll be the last given my current track record of work.
The staff were surprised how quickly i'd managed to learn how to use the system. Considering i did a computer programming course when i was sixteen and worked in a builders merchant with an insanely confusing coding/product retrieval system it was child's play. I'd also passed their induction exams on the first two hours. Apparently the average time is six. Again. it's not the last cashier job i've done. Probably why they took me on in the first place. The only complaint the manager had is that i didn't take the time to talk/chat to the customers. then again the only time he genuinely observed me working was during the rushes.
'when there's a rush there's no time to talk - get scanned get paid get done. next, please.' I argued.
'you don't mess around do you?'
'no point in it. either you say what you mean or you don't. One gets you where you want to go, one delays things. I served, i smiled, i acted politely and courteously. That's the customer service sorted. I'll talk to people when i have the time. but when there's a rush on and there's only two people on the till - no time to talk.'
'well, i guess that's fair enough - how did someone as young as you get as blunt as you are? I thought you'd be more like Chris?'
(chris is a friend of mine - basically it was becasue of him i got the job. he's always been one of these really shy types but is really friendly once you get to know him. the job, and his metalheaded buds like me brought him out of the shell. We're both nice guys, only we've had different histories)
'Chris hasn't got my employment history. I've learned not to mess around - messing around costs time. back in the hospial, time could cost life. Somtimes you just don't have time to talk - just gotta concentrate on your job and hope for the best.'
'talking isn't messing around it ensures customer satisfaction -'
'and customers aren't satisfied if they're stuck in a queue while i'm busy flapping my gums.'
'you don't give up do you?' he asked.
i grinned 'nope. look, i'll settle into a routine. it's been awhile since i've done this. I'll get it.'
'fair enough' he nodded. end of problem.
So yeah. at least i'm in some kind of stability right now. All's well that ends well right?
