Middle son (on the phone): Mum... I don't want to worry you... but-

Me (internally): Oh god...

Middle son: -I've just been hit by a van.

The most important thing to bear in mind when having conversations like this (Yes, I've had similar ones before, both relating to his older brother, though no other vehicles were involved either time he has face planted off his bike.)are not to appear to be over reacting, even while listening for the sound of sirens approaching in the background of his side of the conversation. It is much easier to do this if:

1) The child is calling you himself from his own phone,
&
2) You cannot actually hear the wail of sirens, or the babble of assembling gawkers people trying to help.

Middle son was knocked off the bike he was riding; he has a few grazes and he bumped his head, but he is continuing on his way to work, *carrying* said bicycle because it now has a totally wrecked front wheel.

We've had the concussion conversation, he's under strict instructions from me to phone me on his break, and I've told him to take the bike straight to the bike shop at lunchtime (assuming he's still vertical). Have I missed anything?

He's just rung me to tell me he's taking himself off to A&E because his leg is hurting him so much. :( It's so damn frustrating not to be able to DO anything.
