An 18-year-old Lincoln High School student lost her life Monday afternoon in a traffic crash.
Cherita Smith was a passenger in a gold Chevrolet Malibu sedan, driven by a 17-year-old boy, when the crash occurred around 3 p.m. Monday. The single-car crash occurred on Capitola Road in eastern Leon County.

The sedan left behind a long trail of skid marks after it struck an oak tree and rolled over in a watery ditch, said Chris Chase, spokesman for the Leon County Sheriff's Office. The car was crushed and folded into a U-shape.
The impact of the crash split the oak tree in half, Chase said.
The crash is still being investigated but speed may be a factor, Sgt. Charles Strickland said.
"A nearby resident heard the crash, so he was the first on the scene," Strickland said.
There were no immediate witnesses.
Lincoln High School Principal Martha Bunch said she knew Smith, who was a senior this year. She said this was a tragic incident since graduation is scheduled for this week.
"It's so sad. My heart is heavy," Bunch said. "Graduation is such a joyous time. When a student dies, it really hurts."
The driver was flown to Tallahassee Memorial Hospital after the crash and later released.
