The lineage of the name Priestley begins with the Anglo-Saxon tribes in Britain. The name was derived from the Old English elements "preost," which means "priest," and "leah," which means "forest clearing;" thus the surname means "dweller in or near the forest clearing owned by priests." And no doubt the first bearer of this name lived in such an area. There are several places that have this name; they are found in Bedfordshire, Hertsfordshire, and the West Riding of Yorkshire.
First found in Yorkshire where they were seated from early times and their first records appeared on the early census rolls taken by the early Kings of Britain to determine the rate of taxation of their subjects.
my grandfather was Born in Bradford in west riding of yorkshire, england, I searched priestleys in bradford yorkshire england on google, and this website came up for a giant theater and playhouse named..... THE PRIESTLEY!!!! IN MY GRANDFATHERS HOME TOWN!!!
I also found out the priestley knights of midevil england fought in the CRUSADES!!! in the 1700s a scientist and minister named joseph PRIESTLEY discovered.. OXYGEN!! and invented the CARBONATED DRINK!!! but was mainly a unitarianist minister of the.. PRIESTLEY CHAPEL!!! but sadly the orthodox churches considered his faith and its beleif in the morals of mankind itself rather then that of the holy father and son to be Blasphemy and led orthodox mobs to burn down his home and all his books and possessions he narrowly escaped the fire himself, and then the orthodox mob burnt down the Priestley Chapel. theres a highly distingushed award scientific discoverers can receive today and its called the Joseph Priestey award!!!its a gold medal!!! and then I studied Jhon Boyton Priestley, he was born in the EXACT same town in england, as my great grandfather(Harold Priestley) within five years of the year my great grandfather was born J.B was born in 1894, and became aclaimed as the last great british author and playwrite, throughouut his life he completed over 1000 works, plays, novels, poems, prose, books, and movie of the 1930's. there is a bronze statue of him in bradford, I read parts of his autobiography and every characteristic he described about himself was just like me, he would be happy and sociable then suddenly turn quiet and meloncholy, he was extremely loyal to old friends, he was cocky and sure of himself, and so on
FUCKIN SPECTACULAR EH?
