A glimpse at the past

“Where are we?” Dean said looking at both sides.
“Lawrence, Kansas a little while back” she said and walked towards the sidewalk.

Dean’s eyes widened as he followed Mia with his eyes.

“What?” he muttered and caught up with her with barely a few steps.
“You wanted me to explain and I’ll explain”
“No” he said and stopped abruptly “I won’t… I can’t”
“I thought you wanted to know” Mia said stopping barely a couple of feet away from him.
“Yeah, but I thought about a chat or a glimpse at Lilith, not this” he shook his head “I was there when my mother died, I know what happened… besides I couldn’t” he stopped and bit his bottom lip as he looked down “I don’t think I would be able to see that happen again. I wouldn’t handle it”
“Dean” she walked towards him “We are not in 1983,, it’s 1978”

Dean looked at his sides and then back at her. His eyes widened.

“C’mon, there’s no time to lose” she gestured him to follow her.
“I don’t get it. I wasn’t even born in 1978”
“Exactly” she began to walk again, now towards one of the houses.

Dean followed her closely, recognizing the house that had once been his own. They stood right behind the big tree in front of the entrance of the Winchesters’ house.

“What exactly are we doing here?”
“Just watch”

He looked to the front and had to cover his eyes from a blinding light pointed right at them. A car was coming their way, it slowed down in front of the house and with a loud purr from the engine it came to a stop. Dean felt his heart coming to a stop, he would recognize that sound anywhere, it was his car. As soon as the headlights of the Impala turned off he opened his eyes just in time to see a young man getting out of the front seat of the Impala, his hair was dark and eyes were deep blue, it was easy to sense the joy in the young man’s eyes as he smiled widely and walked towards the opposite side of the car.

“Dad?” Dean’s voice was a whisper as he kept watching the whole scene in front of them.

Suddenly Dean’s eyes widened as he saw how John opened the door from the passenger’s seat and helped a young woman up. Her skin was pale except for her pink cheeks and her hair was blonde and fell to her back forming perfect curls. She smiled at him sweetly and as soon as they stepped away from each other Dean could see why she needed the help, the woman’s belly was really big and she had both of her arms around it protectively.

Dean took a deep breath as he felt his eyes fill with tears “Mom”

Mia looked up at him with caring eyes. But Dean’s were fixed on his parents as they walked into the house.

“Wanna go in with them?” her voice was low.

He didn’t look down at her but simply nodded. Dean had no idea of how this could be anywhere related to what was happening now but part of him just had the need to spend time with them, cause even at the distance he could get a glimpse of the life he had always dreamed of, the one he never had.

Mia closed her eyes and carefully touched his arm. Before Dean knew it they were already standing in a corner of a small living room. The only light was coming from the chimney giving a cozy appearance to the place. Mary was sitting on a couch by the fire while John was lying on the ground behind a green Christmas tree.

“Done!” John said as dozens of lights lighted up the tree “What do you think?” he said standing up.
“That you look adorable” she giggled at John’s face completely covered in leaves and resin.
“About the tree” he half smiled.
“I think it’s perfect” she smiled “What do you think, Dean?” she looked down at her belly and traced circles on it with her forefinger adoringly “You’ll love it, won’t you?”
“You think he’ll come in time to see it?” John said as he sat on the ground by Mary’s feet.
“I really hope so” she smiled “Christmas is my favorite time of the year”

Then the phone rang loudly.

“I’ll go get it, you stay here” he smiled at Mary and then left the room.

“It’s from the Marines” Mia said.

Dean looked down at her, but her eyes never met his.

“They wanted John to go to some sort of ceremony in Washington, a commemoration of some sort and a training of upcoming marines” she shrugged “next year”
“He went?”
“He had to” she nodded “you were born in January 24th, the happiest day in your parents life” she smiled “you should have seen the joy in their faces. A month later John had to leave”

Mia grabbed his hand tightly making him turn towards her instantly. Dean’s eyes were widened as he looked at her; meanwhile Mia was half smiling at him.

“This is what happened afterwards” she whispered as she let go of his hand.

Dean looked to his side and to his surprise they were no longer in the living room but in the doorway. Most of the lights were turned off except for the ones of the hallway upstairs and the bell was ringing insistently.

“Going” They heard Mary’s voice coming from upstairs.

Barely seconds later she walked down the stairs, wearing a nightgown and looking very tired, she had lost most of the pregnancy weight and look just as Dean remembered her. Dean’s eyes widened.

“I think we should-”
“She can’t see us, relax” Mia answered smoothly “just watch”

Dean looked up once again just as Mary ran by them and opened the front door.

“Good night, Mrs. Winchester”
“Oh, thanks God it’s you” Mary said as she placed her palm against her forehead.
“I’m sorry for the delay, I had to do some things for my father before I came”
“Don’t worry. Please, come in”
“Thanks”

Mary got out of the way and a girl stepped in. Dean’s jaw dropped as he looked at the girl in her mid 20’s with brown curled hair and hazel eyes, every feature as close to perfection as possible for a human being. He looked down at Mia and then at the girl standing in front of Mary.

“You” he whispered.
“Yes”

Mary closed the front door and looked at the girl.

“Are you sure you can stay the night, Mia?” she said with her arms crossed, worry in her features.
“Don’t worry, Mrs. Winchester” she smiled “My father can take care of himself for a night, besides you definitely need some rest”
“You are right about the last part” Mary sighed “It’s just really hard to do so many things by myself and John won’t come home until next month”
“You won’t have to worry anymore I’m here to help”

“In the following month I spent every night with you, baby sitting you at night and pretending to leave every morning but keeping guard outside“ she looked up at Dean gently.
“But what happened then?”
“They found you”

Immediately Dean saw how the scenery changed right in front of his eyes, they were no longer standing on the doorway but in a room. The walls were painted light blue, there was a small crib and Mia was sitting on a swing chair by the window with a small baby on her arms.

“Keep your eyes open” she whispered.

Dean looked carefully at the Mia from the past holding him in her arms carefully as the chair swung back and forth. Suddenly they disappeared right in front of his eyes just to reappear on the hallway behind him. Dean turned around abruptly but Mia grabbed him by the arm.

“There’s no need to run” she said.

Everything around them changed immediately so they were now in the master bedroom. The Mia from the past was now carrying Dean in one arm as she tried to wake up his mother.

“Mary, Mary!” her voice was low but insistent.
“What!” she jumped to her feet instantly “Is Dean, ok?”
“Yes, just calm down” Mia said putting a hand on Mary’s shoulder “Listen, we need to leave now!”
“What are you talking about?”
“There’s no time for explanations, Mary, we must go”

Then a loud noise was heard downstairs.

“What the hell is going on?” Mary said walking towards the door, but Mia caught her by the arm.
“Mary, there are demons in here, I know you know what I mean”

Both women stared into each other’s eyes for a couple of seconds.

“I have a gun in the basement”

Dean’s eyes widened as he looked down at Mia standing by him.

“Mom-”
“Was a hunter”

He couldn’t believe it, his own mother a hunter. For some reason he just couldn’t imagine that beautiful and protective woman in front of him shooting at demons and killing supernatural creatures.

“There’s no time” the Mia from the past said as she grabbed Mary by the arm “Hold on to me tightly”
“What?”
“Do it!”

Mary closed her arms around her waist tightly and a pale glow slowly surrounded them and filled the room. Dean could see how the figures in front of them seemed to fade away slowly. Suddenly the door of the room swung open and a tall man with a gray jacket and bright yellow eyes walked in.

“Oh no, you won’t” Azazel’s tone was mocking.

He stretched his arm just as they disappeared and half smiled.

“You escaped” Dean whispered.
“Not quite” Mia sighed as the background changed once again.

Dean examined the front yard, they were once again behind the big tree in front of the Winchester’s house. He saw how with a loud thud Mary fell to the ground along with Mia who had her arms protectively around Dean. Mia stood on her feet quickly and helped Mary up.

“What was all that about?” Mary said looking around as at least a dozen of demons walked towards them from all directions, like hunters slowly approaching their prey.
“Azazel” Mia said looking around “Take Dean and close your eyes”

Mary hesitated for a moment but took Dean in her arms and covered his eyes with her palm just as she closed hers.

As soon as they did Mia took a deep breath and the glow that had appeared up in the master bedroom reappeared quickly increasing intensity, turning quickly into a blinding light. The demons screamed in pain and covered their eyes as if they were being burned alive. Dean looked at her at the distance, and his eyes widened just as he saw a pair of wings open at her sides and surround Mary and the baby in her arms, the wings were made of pure light.

“Take Dean and go” the angel whispered at Mary “Walk seven steps to the front before you open your eyes and whatever you do, don’t look back”
“What about you?” Mary whispered.
“I can’t leave, as soon as they get their sight back they’ll go after you”

Mary nodded as she held Dean even more tightly in her arms and began to walk, but just as she opened her eyes and began to run a loud gasp could be heard. Azazel had appeared right behind Mia and caught her by the neck.

“You, slippery cockroach” his voice was strong and wrathful “You thought you would take the boy away from me”
“Leave him alone, Azazel” she said as her wings disappeared “He has done nothing wrong”
“But you see… I want him” he half smiled.
“Too bad”

Right in front of their eyes she disappeared from his grip and reappeared right behind one of Azazel’s soldiers, the demon screamed just as she stabbed a knife on his chest and then fell to the floor dead.

“What the hell?” Azazel looked to his sides just as one by one his men fell to the ground.

Finally none stood on its feet and Mia was looking at him directly several meters away.

“What did you do?”
“I made things more even“ she said, her fingers were gripped tightly around the knife still burning in her hand “Now leave”

He hesitated for a moment looking at her face, but then busted into laughter.

“Seriously, kid” he said “you think you can stop me?”

Immediately both of them disappeared. Dean would had sworn he would have gotten used to the change of scenery by this moment but it still caught him by surprise when he saw they were no longer in the front yard but in the middle of the street several meters away. Mary was running as fast as she could still holding Dean on her arms as tears ran down her cheeks.

“Going somewhere?” Azazel’s voice came from behind them.

Mary turned around and found herself face to face with the demon, she took two steps back.

“Get away from my son!”
“Or what?” he half smiled as he walked towards her and slapped her on the face causing her to fall to the ground “You humans are pitiful”

Dean could feel all of his muscles tighten just as a flush of anger ran through his veins even stronger than before; it was almost pleasant to feel the thirst, the eagerness for revenge in his mouth.

“Calm down” Mia whispered from his side “Or we’ll have to leave. This is a memory there’s nothing you can do to change it”

He stiffened trying to contain himself.

“Your son is about to be taken away from you and this is all you can do about it?” he tried to slap her but Mary caught his arm. With a face filled of disgust he threw her to he side.

Suddenly with a bright light the Mia from the past appeared right between them.

“Leave them alone” she whispered.

Mary made an effort to stand up and took several steps back.

“What do you think you’ll do to stop me?”
“What do you think?” Mia said.

Mia and Azazel walked towards each other and suddenly came to a stop; both had attacked and were now staring directly into each other’s eyes. Mia looked down, she had barely scratched Azazel with her knife but black smoke was coming out of the wound as if the contact with the blade had forced him out of his shell, meanwhile there was a black knife stuck through her stomach burning her.

The man being possessed by Azazel fell to the floor as the smoke disappeared along with the black knife, meanwhile Mia fell to the ground on her knees still holding her knife on her hand. She gasped and coughed as she felt the poison burning her insides.

“What the hell was that?” Dean said shocked, making an effort to keep down his anger.
“The dagger of the devil” she whispered “it’s the demons most precious possession”

Meanwhile in the middle of the street Mia fought to stand on her feet, a black liquid was now running down her stomach and into the ground. She took a couple of steps and got to Mary and Dean in no time.

“Hold on to me” she whispered.
“You can’t” Mary’s voice broke “you are too weak”
“I can do it” Mia nodded and a string of poison ran down the corner of her lips.

Mary held her tightly as her eyes filled with tears and they disappeared.

“I tried to take them as far as I could” Dean was surprised to hear Mia speak from besides him “But Mary was right, I couldn’t”

With these words the scenery changed. They were now barely a block farther.

“You must run away as far as you can” Mia said out of breath.
“What will happen to you?” Mary said.

Mia didn’t say a thing but simply looked at the distance.

“Take this with you” she said handing over the knife to Mary “If someone ever comes to hurt your family this will work, just keep it hidden in the meantime”

Mary nodded as she looked at her son.

“And don’t be afraid, we’ll always be watching” Mia said trying to smile at her “Now run”

Mary began to walk away but stopped suddenly.

“Mia” she whispered.
“Yes?”
“Thank you”

Having this said Mary ran away as fast as she could. Meanwhile Mia began to walk back in the same direction they had come from.

“What the hell are you doing?” Dean said.
“Stopping the demons from following you” she whispered.

Both of them kept their eyes on the Mia from the past. She was stumbling with every step she took and finally stood in the middle of the street. Suddenly she fell to the ground as a demon tackled her and began to punch her on the face; she didn’t fight back, didn’t even move. Slowly more of them approached mocking and laughing as they began to drag her down the street kicking and spitting her.

“Those sons of bitches!” Dean muttered as he began to walk in their direction, he could feel his own body temperature increase abruptly but he didn’t care, those demons had ruined his entire life all he wanted now was to end them, to turn them into ashes with his bare hands.
“Dean!” Mia yelled as she grabbed his arm and turned him around “Oh, no”

Dean looked at her with his eyes completely black, his features morphed by wrath.

“We must go” she said “Now!”

Immediately the bright light surrounded them once again erasing everything around.
