Separate Worlds

Sam took a deep breath as images of what had just happened flashed right in front of his eyes. He could see the black smoke swirling right in front of him, floating slowly around, weightless even gracious and then suddenly hurrying inside of him. There was a demon inside of him he was sure, and he wasn't even counting the incident in the first motel, but it didn’t’ matter how many were they the only question around his mind was why? Why did the smoke fly out of the woman’s body? Why did he feel that sudden need to react in that mechanic way? Why could the demon get inside of him when he still had that same old protection tattooed on his chest? But probably the question bothering him the most was why wasn’t he possessed? Sam had been possessed fore an entire week before and this definitely didn’t’ feel like it, the only thing he felt out of place other than the preoccupation building up inside his chest and making his head pound was a sharp pain on his shoulder, probably from the fight, and an annoying sensation of dryness on his throat. He coughed repeatedly and looked outside the window, the scenery at the side just seemed like a big green blurry spot as the Impala ran down the lonely road.

“Turn to the right” Jim said from the back seat.

Dean made an abrupt turn and went down a smaller road. It was really narrow barely allowing the Impala to pass through; vegetation had erased the rest of the old path. Sam looked at his brother, Dean’s hands were gripped tightly around the steering wheel and his foot was permanently stumped on the pedal, he didn’t’ take his eyes off the road. Dean hadn’t said a single word ever since they had gotten inside the car.

“This is too risky” Ruby mumbled, more to herself than to the others.

She was sitting in the front seat, between Sam and Dean; meanwhile Bobby, Jim and Joanne were on the back seat.

“It’s better than taking the main road” Bobby cut her off quickly “By this time they should be looking for us already”
“All this attitude is what got us here in the first place” she mumbled annoyed, looking through the window.
“Oh shut up!” Bobby moaned “if you are not going to say something useful then don’t say anything at all!” he took a deep breath “we better lay low, God knows how many demons are after us already”
“Slow down, son” Jim said, his voice seemed like a whisper compared to Bobby’s “The town is right there” he pointed at two big wooden poles, both standing at opposite sites of the old road, clearly they were holding a sign once, but it was long gone.

Dean slowed down the Impala as they passed by the poles. Remains of what seemed to be houses came to sight; grass had grown tall hiding almost completely the pieces of wood a rock left on the ground. The town had 2 houses barely standing but with several damages, there was a small church with brick walls and a bell on top also there was a well that stood dangerously close to the road that passed throughout the abandoned town.

“Bobby, are you sure It is safe to spend the night here?...” Sam began as he took a look around the place “I mean… I know this road was safer than the main one, but isnt’ staying the night-”
“It’ll be fine” Dean cut him off, his voice steady and firm, making Joanne jump on her seat and Sam turn abruptly towards him. Dean hadn’t spoken in so long that this sudden expression was beyond unexpected.
“What?” Sam whispered, more thinking out loud than actually meaning to ask.
“I said it would be fine” Dean repeated more slowly, now looking at Sam for a couple of seconds but quickly looking away and outside the window “As Bobby said, they were too many. One of them could have easily escaped and talked to Lilith… I have no doubt of that” he sighed “the main road will be watched, and they’ll be tracking any movement in a mile radius… I think is better to stay the night, especially since nightfall stepping on our footsteps. They’ll be difficult to beat in the day, but in the dark we don’t have a chance”

As he said this he stopped the engine of the Impala. Joanne gasped from the back seat and Sam could hear Jim whispering to her, trying to calm her down. Sam still hadn’t taken his eyes of him, Dean had always being determined and really clever when ti came to strategies and hunting, it almost seemed natural to him but this wasn’t how he usually did things. Sam had to admit his brother was right about staying under the radar but in the same time there was something that didn’t’ belong there, was it a glimpse of sadness he could see on Dean’s eyes? Or maybe something else.

“He’s right” Bobby’s voice worked almost like a trigger, bringing Sam back into his senses right away.
“Are you sure this will work?” Ruby rolled his eyes “I mean the…” she made a brief pause, clearly uncomfortable “the church thing”
“You know that’ the actual advantage of having you around” Bobby said “We can actually test it”

Losing no time Bobby opened the back door of the Impala and stepped out of the car, followed by Jim and Joanne. Sam took a deep breath and looked at Dean once again, he had knows him all his life and barely left his side in the past three years, how could Dean expect him not to notice something was wrong? Not to do something? They stood there for a couple of seconds, not looking at each other or saying a single word. Each carrying his own weight, two separate worlds.

“De-” Sam began but before he could continue Dean had already opened the front door and stepped out of the car.
“C’mon, Sam, let’s go” Sam heard Dean’s voice coming from outside.

He simply shook his head slightly and took a deep breath.

“Yeah, sure” he mumbled and then stepped out of the Impala.

Around them a cold wind was blowing. Sam tried to clear his throat; he still had that strange sensation on his throat it felt so dry that the sudden cold breeze hurt him as took a deep breath with his mouth. He immediately started coughing; every cough felt as if a piece of sand paper was being slid down the insides of his lungs, but it didn’t matter how much he tried he couldn’t stop. Sam leaned against the Impala for support and covered his mouth with his hand. Barely seconds later he regained control of himself, but he was now breathing heavily, he took a brief glimpse at his hand and his eyes widened making him look at it again, this time more carefully. There were several drops of blood on the palm that had just being covering his mouth.

“Sam!” Dean called not too far away.

Sam quickly hid his hand inside his pocket and looked up, trying to look as calmed as he could. Dean was standing by the well staring at him with a worried expression, he looked years older as a person who hasn’t slept in days or has worn his own energy out.

“Are you ok?” Dean said “you better hurry and get inside, seems like you are getting a cold”

Sam stood there for a couple of seconds just staring into Dean’s eyes. Finally he nodded.

“Yeah” he whispered and hurried towards his brother.
Dean and Sam were now walking side by side, both had their hands inside their jackets trying to cover themselves from the cold wind, they kept and unconscious similar pace as they walked towards the church where the others were.

“Dean” Sam finally broke the silence.

Dean didn’t say a thing but simply stared at him.

“Are you… ok?” Sam mumbled and then looked at his brother.

Dean half smiled and then looked towards the church.

“There’s nothing to worry about, Sam” he mumbled.
“It’s just…”
“I’m tired. Just a bit of sleep and I’ll be as good as new”

Sam bit his bottom lip. He knew Dean wasn’t going to tell him anything, and probably this wasn’t the right time to speak about it, after all he couldn’t blame him for being worried, especially with everything happening around.

The sun had already fallen and the last shades of orange were now melting under the dark purple clouds which were closely followed by darkness.

“You two, come and help” Bobby mumbled as he gave each of them a can of paint “put some around the church, you know just in case”

Both of them took them without hesitation.

By the time they were done painting they could barely see where they were standing, the only light besides the moonlight was a small oil lamp Bobby had found and placed at the entrance of the church.

Dean walked slowly towards the others. Bobby, Sam and Ruby were standing by the entrance having some kind of argument.

“Try it!” Bobby insisted.
“Sure, grandpa” Ruby mumbled mockingly.

Slowly she walked forward towards the big wooden doors and pushed them open, she took a deep breath and took another step forward, but she stopped right before she crossed the threshold. Dean looked at Sam and then back at Ruby. What was she doing? She took a deep breath and then tried again, but just as she was about to step inside the church something pulled her back.

“Perfect” Bobby whispered.

Ruby turned on her heels, clearly infuriated.

“Yeah, you ladies go inside” she mumbled as she walked down the front steps of the church “I’ll be keeping an eye around, just scream if your panties drop or something”

Quickly she ran out of sight. Barely seconds later Bobby walked inside the church where Jim and Joanne were probably waiting. Sam, too, turned around but stopped on the threshold as he noticed he wasn’t being followed.

“Aren’t you coming in?” Sam whispered.

Dean was standing by the front steps looking down.

“Yeah” he tried to fake an easygoing tone “You know I’ll go… in a few minutes” he looked up “you know, nature calls” he half smiled, but it looked forced.

Sam studied his brother’s expression.

“Sure” He mumbled still staring at Dean.
“And you know” he searched through his pockets “there” he tossed something at him.

Sam tried to catch it, not quite sure of what it was in the middle of the dark, but as he looked down at the keys on his hand he frowned and looked at Dean.

“Left my gun on the car, why don’t you go get it for me while I’m not around” Dean said.

Dean had just gave him the keys of the car, his car, the car. This just couldn’t be ok.

“Please?” Dean insisted cocking his head to the side.
“Yeah, no problem” Sam walked down the small steps not taking his eyes off Dean.
“And Sammy” he said “Take are, ok?”

Sam nodded and began to walk away, the keys inside his closed fist as he walked towards the car. He desperately wanted to believe Dean was fine and that everything was just going to be ok, that they’ll just lay low and he’d wake up the next day just to find out Dean was back to being himself and even he was back to normal, but deep down inside him he knew it wouldn’t be that easy.
