The sun was about to come out and a chilly breeze made Sam Winchester close his jacket around him tightly as he stored the bag inside the trunk of the Impala.
“Ready?”
He turned around slowly and found Ruby standing by him, her sight lost at the distance.
“I guess” he said.
Ruby had been really serious since they had gotten there, not to mention absent looking. Sam wasn’t really sure if it was because of the deal he had made or because of Dean’s fight with Mia, but whatever it was he rather not ask.
“This is going to be harder than we planned” she said shaking her head.
Immediately Sam knew what se mean, if Mia would have been there she could have transported them anywhere they wanted to in a blink of an eye, but now things weren’t going to be that simple.
“We must act really fast” she muttred “They still don’t know about Dean coming back or the deal you made… but once they know” she stopped herself in the middle of the sentence and looked at Sam.
There was no need to say the rest of the sentence, he could guess how Lilith would react and her wrath was something he wanted to avoid at any cost.
“Ruby…” Sam began to say, this same question had been popping inside his head for the long now “why did Lilith stay away for all this time? We haven’t seen her since…” he suddenly stopped, even though Dean was back with him he just didn’t feel like talking about that night, all it did was reminding him of all the sacrifices and the pain Dean had gone through to save him.
She look away once again, “What happened that night, a month ago, certainly caught her off guard” she said in a low tone “The whole ‘boy king’ subject is pretty known around and Lilith knew about it, but she didn’t expect anything more than just an above average hunter and what you did… was something that totally change her opinion about you”
“How’s that?”
“She… no longer sees you as an obstacle anymore” he turned to look at him “You are her enemy now, her nemesis”
Sam could feel goose bumps on the back of his neck. Suddenly the door of the motel room swung open and Dean came out, Bobby’s arm was resting on his shoulders for support.
“Seems your stay in hell didn’t affect you much did it, boy?” Bobby smiled in amusement as he stared at Dean, his eyes were filled of pure joy as he looked at them, joy that hadn’t filled the old man ever since one of his boys died.
Bobby had just woken up about an hours or so ago, and after trying to exorcise Dean and throwing holly water when he thought Dean wasn’t looking accepted the fact that it was actually him. Bobby didn’t look so bad now that he was on his feet and smiling, all the scratches certainly didn’t hurt his spirit.
“How are you feeling, Bobby?” Sam asked.
“Good as new” he laughed, but started coughing almost right away,.
“We are against time, ladies” Ruby reminded them as she crossed her arms and tapped her feet impatiently.
Dean opened the back door of the Impala and helped Bobby sit down.
“Good to go” He said, but as he turned around Ruby was right next to him “What?”
She pointed at the keys on his right hand.
“Hell no” he muttered “I might still be shaken up but I’m not stupid”
“Listen, pretty boy, there are dozens of demons tracking and searching just for us” she made a pause “If they don’t find you’re alive they won’t suspect anything about the deal, they wee you… we’re done. Get it?”
“Say what you wanna say, witch” Dean said “You still aren’t driving”
“You…”
“I’ll drive!” Sam said taking a step forward.
“You?”
“No-”
“I said, I’ll drive” Sam’s voice was louder now, he quickly reached for Deans’ keys and take them off his hand “Don’t like it? Too bad”
He quickly opened the front door and sat on the driver’s seat. Ruby and Dean stood there staring at each other coldly for a couple of seconds. Finally she opened the back door for him.
“Your seat, my lady” she mocked, her expression still serious.
“Bite me” Dean mumbled as he sat next to Bobby.
Losing no time Ruby walked over to the other side of the car and sat down on the passenger’s seat. With a loud roar the Impala’s engine turned on and started running fast.
The dawn was breaking at the east as they quickly ran down streets and highways leaving cities and small towns behind in no time. They kept going non stop for hours, there was still a long road ahead.
. . .
“I told you that’s the only trail we’ve got!” Ruby said from the front seat.
“Well then we must look for a fastest way to travel” Bobby said.
“Yeah, I mean even with me on the wheel there’s no way we’d get to New York in less than a week” Dean mumbled.
“Don’t tell me about it, this isn’t nowhere near to what we had planned in the first place” Ruby said sharply.
“We still have a chance” Sam quickly said, trying to avoid the topic of last night’s fight so Dean didn’t explode once again “If they are looking for me then she must be moving, right?” we can’t expect her to just sit down and do nothing”
“That the main problem” Dean made a pause “we can’t really expect them to do anything, we have no clue of what they’ll do”
A brief silence was produced in which none of them said a single thing, each emerged in deep thought. Dean was right, none of them knew for sure what the demons wanted, how many or where they were, what was the point? It was like moving in circles. Suddenly the silence was broken as they approached the entrance of a small town. The four passengers kept their mouths half open as they stared through the front mirror at what was happening.
Right in front of their own eyes the whole town was on fire. As they moved forward slowly they could see the flames bursting out of the smashed windows of small commercial locals and how the fire consumed anything that got on its way. Half of the town had already turned into ashes.
Sam’s eyes widened as he looked ahead, in the middle of a small crossroad near the center of the place were several cars, remains of people remained inside.
“They were burnt alive” Bobby’s rough voice came from the backseat.
“What the hell” Dean began as he looked through the windows.
“Guess you would find out sooner or later” Ruby whispered.
The other three turned to look at her.
“Lilith has been searching for you” she looked at Sam “city by city, town by town, but as she finds nothing of interest…”
“She erases the entire city?” Dean said shocked.
Ruby looked at him momentarily and then back at Sam “She said she’d make you run out of places to hide”
Sam slowly turned to look at the road once again. Was all of this because of him? He couldn’t help but think of al the people who had died like this, all the brothers and sisters, the broken families, just like his own.
“This isn’t the first town?” he whispered.
“No” Ruby muttered “Three that I know, counting this one”
Sam stood motionless, feeling as is an endless whole was groins inside his chest. It was his fault that his mother had died, that Jess had died, even Dean died because of him, and now this? When was it going to stop? For a brief moment he thought of what life would be if he just gave up, no more people getting injured or killed because of him, no more fights, but then the image of him become one of them or the chances of him fulfilling the destiny the Yellow Eyed demon had planned for him disgusted him. Dean’s voice broke that imaginary out of the sudden.
“Sam” Dean said resting his hand on his brother’s shoulder “It isn’t your fault”
He looked down, nto wanting to argue with him and with one single question on his mind ‘If it wasn’t his, then who’s?’.
“C’mon let’s continue. There’s no point on staying here”
Sam stepped on the pedal of the Impala but nothing happened. He shook his head lightly and did it one more time. Dean opened the door and took a look at wheels.
“What the hell-” he began.
The wheels of the Impala were rolling fast, producing smoke as the marked the pavement beneath them, but it didn’t matter how fast they rolled, the Impala didn’t move.
“What is it?” Bobby said.
“I don’t know” Dean whispered.
“It’s them” Ruby said looking through the window “they’ve located us”
“What?” Sam said looking to the sides.
Suddenly Dean felt as if an invisible wave had passed right by him really fast, he turned quickly in that same direction and saw four shapes approaching at the distance.
“They’re here” he said, opened the door and stepped out.
“What the hell are you doing?” Sam yelled.
“Buying you some time” was all he said as he pulled a gun from underneath the driver’s seat.
“Damn it!” Ruby mumbled as she got out of the car and stood by Dean “I knew you weren’t one of the cleverest people out there but this… really out does your stupidity record”
Dean raised his eyebrows and shook his head lightly.
“Probably” he said.
With another screech of the old metallic doors of the Impala Sam came out of the car and walked towards them.
“Why the hell did you come out?”
“I’m helping you” Sam said holding a shotgun on his hand.
“Then who’s gonna try to move the car? Get back in!” Dean said.
“No” Sam said reluctantly “Bobby’s on that, besides I lost you once and I’m not planning to do it again”
Dean remained silent, as much as he wanted to find a reason to forbid Sam from doing this he couldn’t, after all this was something he was likely to do himself.
The shapes stopped about 50m away, examining them as if waiting for the appropriate time to attack. Suddenly the demon standing in the center, a tall man with shoulder-length black hair, began to run at full speed towards them, but Ruby ran to his encounter. As she did they both began fighting fiercely, throwing kicks and punches at each other that would have certainly killed any human.
Meanwhile two of the others also began to run, each in the direction of one of the brothers. A lean man ran towards Sam and a young girl towards Dean. Finally the last one joined the man of the black hair as he fought Ruby.
As the young girl jumped towards Dean he shot her with rock salt several times, causing her to scream in pain and slow down. He kept shooting, but the girl didn’t stop running, finally she punched him throwing him to the ground and throwing herself over him.
At the same time Sam fought the other man, shooting him several times and then hitting him with the back of the shotgun. The young man recovered in no time grabbed Sam by the collar and threw him against the Impala.
“Bobby!” Sam muttered.
“I’m trying, boy! I’m trying” Bobby said desperate from the inside of the Impala as he tried to make it run without any result.
Sam got to his feet right before the demon got to him once more time. Sam hit the demon in the stomach making it take a couple of steps back, but immediately grabbed him again, this time Sam grabbed the boy’s arms tightly so that he couldn’t hit him
Dean had already manage to get on his feet once again, had a bruise on his cheek but other than that there was no major damage on him. The girl stood barely meters away from him, both of them breathing heavily.
“C’mon, that was it?” Dean muttered.
The girl half smiled and ran towards him but as she approached he punched her in the face with all of his strength and to his surprise she fell to the floor. His eyes widened, normally it would take at least five swings to make a demon even flinch and now this one lay on the ground motionless. He took out a bottle of holly water and bent down slowly, trying not to let down his defenses. Carefully Dean turned the girl around but as he did she opened her mouth and a thick cloud of black smoked crawled out of her body.
“What-” Dean began, but was cut off as someone kicked him on the back.
He felt against the cold pavement and turned around quickly. Standing by him was the man with the long hair, his expression was cold and fierce, as if he had just witnessed what Dean had done and was infuriated by it.
The man grabbed Dean by the neck and pulled him up really fast so his feet were no longer touching the ground. He was looking straight into the demon’s impenetrable black eyes as he felt the air slowly leaving his lungs, Dean made an effort to close both of his hands around the man’s and gripped it tightly, his fingers slowly sinking on the demon’s arm. Suddenly the man looked at his arm, his eyes widened and eyebrows moved closer to each other in confusion.
“You” the demon looked up at him, still not letting go of Dean’s throat.
“No!” Sam shouted at the distance as he tan towards them.
The dark haired man looked towards him. And immediately his mouth opened and dark smoke crawled out of it, the man fell to the ground along with Dean.
“Are you ok?” Sam muttered.
“Yeah” Dean said as he sat up straight and placed his palm against the right side of his head “awesome”
“We gotta go” Ruby came running at full speed towards them “They know we are here”
“Who?”
“Lilith” she said as she ran towards the car.
Sam helped Dean up and they quickly got inside the car. Dean was on the wheel now.
“She knows?” Sam muttered as she sat on the passenger’s seat next to his brother, while Ruby and Bobby sat on the back “How?”
“One of them escaped” she muttered and looked at Dean.
“Hey, if you could have done it better why didn’t you kill it yourself?” Dean mumbled as he stepped on the pedal with all of his strength. This time the Impala started running fast.
“So what now?” Sam said.
“So now we get the crap out of here” She said as she took one last look behind “we cover our tracks and keep a low profile. It won’t be long before Lilith finds out about the whole deal and that’s when her defenses will be up and all of her men will hunt us”
“That’s great” Dean mumbled.
He tried to take a deep breath, ever since he had felt that wave pass by him back in that town he felt his own body temperature increasing as if he had a fever he couldn’t sweat. Next to him Sam coughed repeatedly.
“You ok, Sammy?” Dean said looking at his brother.
“Yeah, its just…” he said as he rested his hand on his throat “I’m thirsty”
“We’ll stop in a motel at the next state and rest” he said.
“Are you out of your mind?” Ruby complained from the back seat “haven’t you heart anything I’ve said, we are the demon’s target besides we have no time to go around this silly things we must end Lilith”
“Yeah, that’s exactly why we must spend the night in” Dean said “they’ll search the Texas first, since it was were they actually saw us and that will buy us some time for us to rest and for Lilith to come near. If she wants us, she’ll find us”
With those last words Dean stepped on the pedal even more firmly, the Impala’s engine roared loudly as it run like an arrow cutting the wind.
