Chapter 1
A Dog's Life
"Her name was Ravensdale. To many, she was known a seer, to some, a witch, and to others, a simple girl. These claims, though inaccurate, are true; for Ravensdale is an apportioner. She was from an ancient family of witch who are said to have the power to control fate. To some, these powers are a gift; to others, a curse.
"Black-haired with eyes, cat-like and yellow, to some, she was seen as a freak, to men, a beauty; To some of her fellow witches, a daughter of Moirae for these traits are said to have been the goddess's as well. But to other witches, a fraud, for she could only read fortunes, never control them.
"To five she was a family: a daughter to two, and a sister to three.
"To one she was a desire, and to another, a lover. Two brothers have been bewitched by her beauty, and one triumph over her heart. For she may be a witch, but she was first a human, a woman.
"Their love was seen, to some, an eminence, to many, an absurdity, and to one, an abhorrence. For the older brother was enraged, his heart filled with jealousy. He could not accept that she will never be his, that she will be his brother's.
"And so, before their wedding; before she was own by another, he killed her. For no one should acquire her if not him; for he blames her for what he feels: she was a witch, she controlled his fate, she played with his feelings.
"And for good measure, he killed her family; as to truly conquer her, as to stop their line, as to stop the power to control fate, as to stop another him.
"And then, he took his own life, for his life now has no purpose, for she took his life as he did hers.
"But unknown to him, the line lives. For the youngest sister survived. And through her, another daughter of Moirae shall descend. Bearing yellow eyes and black hair, she shall control another thread of life.
"And thus, the older brother shall again, ascend. For life is but a circle, for history shall always repeat itself, for fate cannot be truly controlled by anyone but Moiré herself."
"And then Cerberus came!" shouted a little boy.
A woman with long black hair and a kind face chuckled. "Cerberus is in Hades, he can't come." She said. "How am I going to make you sleep? This is your third story tonight but I still don't see my son sleeping."
"I'm not yet sleepy! Tell me another story! About Cerberus!" he said as a yawn escape from his mouth.
"No, I don't think so. It's way pass your bedtime. And you are truly at your limit." his mother scolded, the yawn not going unnoticed.
"But I want another story!" pleaded the boy.
"Maybe tomorrow when you and Dad returns." his mom said, smiling. "Now go to sleep."
The boy obliges and laid down his bed, his mom tucking him in. And for a moment, the boy was silent.
"Mom, can we have a Cerberus?" the boy asked sleepily.
"Hm, I'm not sure. A three-headed dog seems a lot of maintenance" his mom said.
"Then an Orthrus!" the boy said eagerly.
"I think a two-headed dog is still too much. How about just one-headed dog?"
"But that's boring! I want at least an Orthrus..." the boy pouted. Her mother chuckled again.
"I don't think we'll be able to find an Orthrus or a Cerberus." the mother said as the boy closed his eyes.
"Why?" he asked in a soft voice.
"Because Cerberus is in Hades and Orthrus is with Eurytion. And I don't think we could afford even a one-headed dog. I'm sorry, dear, but Mom and Dad can't right now. You know, with dad’s job..." the mother sighed.
"It's okay, I understand." said the boy, eyes still closed.
"We're really sorry, but I promise to buy you one when we have more money." the mother said, but the boy barely heard.
"But just one-headed dog?" he asked again.
"Just one. Sorry sweetie." said the mother.
"It's okay. When I grow up, I'll get a better job than dad then buy myself a three-headed dog! Maybe even four!"
"What do you want to be when you grow up?" the mother whispered to her half asleep son.
"A god..." the boy said as finally, sleep settled in.
"Up! Get Up!"
"Mom?" Yuto woke with a start.
"Don't be silly, boy. You have no mother." Yuto heard, rather than saw Hosho-san, the matron of the orphanage, enter his room. "Hurry and get up! The Fujikis will be arriving soon, and frankly it's unlikely but any chance I have to get rid of you, I'll take. Now get UP!" she screeched the last word.
Yuto rolled onto his back, sat up and grudgingly tried to remember his dream. It wasn't the first time he had this dream. It was his only memory of his mother. Well, the first one to abandon him.
Yuto has been raised in different orphanage ever since his grandfather died when he was only six years old. After eight years, four orphanages, and two families, Yuto now just wants to be of age so he could live by himself and escape this miserable existence they called his life.
"What are you sitting there for? Hurry and get ready! For goodness' sake! If the Fujikis change their mind-!" Hosho-san snapped as she exited through the door.
The Fujikis is a married couple. The other day, they called saying they were interested in adopting Yuto. Where this interest of adopting a fourteen-years-old boy came, they did not know but it was a relief for the orphanage. Yuto could tell; they weren't subtle about it. And he could understand. After all, who in their right mind would choose to adopt a teenager when there were many younger orphans.
But to Yuto, it was an annoyance. Why can't they just leave him be? Don't they know that they're just fooling themselves into thinking they could help Yuto by adopting him? Over and over again, he was passed from one orphanage to another. Families offering home, promising love, and then taking it back. People he barely knew choosing and deciding for him. Can't he take charge of his own life for once?
He slowly got up and fumbled through his bag pack, looking for something to wear. It was an easy feat as he didn't own many clothes. He didn't own many things, really. His possessions comprises of some old clothes, a pair of shoes, a picture of his grandfather, an old book and a bag pack where he kept them.
When he got dressed, he went downstairs to eat a hurried breakfast as he was already late. The Fujikis were arriving by noon and hopefully, will be leaving disappointed. He was sick of transferring from one place to another, sick of people pretending to care for him, making promises they couldn't keep, then casting him aside once they had their fun.
After eating, Yuto went back to his room. He didn't like to be with the other orphans much. And no one was his age so the other orphans weren’t really interested in him.
True to their word, the Fujikis arrived by noon. Yuto saw them enter through his window in his bedroom on the second floor.
He expected an old couple, but they weren't. They were at most in their early thirties. Fujiki-okusan looks stern but good-natured. She has black long hair and deep eyes. Fujikii-san on the other hand, was a thin man with brown hair and black kind eyes under his glasses.
Yuto bump his head as he went through his door, intending to follow the couple through the window by the staircase. Recently, he had undergone a growth spurt. He was always too tall for his age but now at fourteen, he was almost as tall as the door. Yuto didn't much like this because he was also lanky. Suzuki-san, the helper, says she has a son who used to have the same built as he, but grown out of it after his teens. Yuto was praying it was the same for him.
Yuto also have a thin face. He has black hair and black eyes, and his face looks more mature than others of his age. Maybe that's one reason why no one since the Yamashitas (and until the Fujikis) was keen in adopting him.
After his grandfather died of a heart attack, Guardian Angel Home took him in. Some people thought the name fits perfectly. To Yuto, it was a great irony. He was often bullied there by the older orphans that he was even thankful that the building became unstable --due to old age no doubt-- and the orphans was taken in by other orphanages in the vicinity.
Kaze no Oka Home then took him in. He was more comfortable there and he even made some friends. The orphanage was run by the church and so was always given donation by Catholics. They were properly fed and were even taught by the nuns.
Then the Sawadas came. They were an old married couple with no children. They adopted him and named him their son even though they could pass as his grandparents. Those three years with them were the happiest for Yuto. But it was cut short when a burglar came and took them away from him. The burglar was caught the same night. A fire broke out just when the thief was leaving and he was locked up in the lavatory. And he was once again, an orphan.
Bikou-En Orphanage next took him in. It didn’t much felt like home. Maybe because he now knew what it was like to have a family. But he only stayed there for a little while. He didn’t even unpack his things.
The Yamashitas came and they decided to adopt him. He just went with it. He was respectful and proper to them. He thought they would like that. But they didn’t. They said he wasn’t normal. They said he was too cold. They tried to return him to Bikou-En but he was already too old so instead, they brought him here, in Eden Gardens.
He started descending the stairs, not waiting for Hosho-san to call him. He thought he should just do it properly and get it over with. It was unlikely that they would adopt him. Most people consider it impractical to adopt a teenager.
"Yuto-kun, you're here." Hosho-san said in a false-sweet tone as she saw Yuto by the door. She always use that tone in company. Usually, she just screeches. But Yuto never thought of her as an awful woman, she's just having the same miserable life as he is. He thought he wouldn't mind screeching every now and then.
"Hello, sir, ma'am." Yuto curtsied, nodding to Fujiki-san first, and then to his wife.
They were like any other couples visiting the orphanage but surprisingly, they have children; four to be exact. Three are adopted, and one theirs. They adopted two before their daughter was born. They adopted another just last year and now they're interested in adopting Yuto.
"Hello there, young man. So you're Yuto?"
It was mostly Fujiki-okusan and Hosho-san who were talking with Yuto nodding every now and then and Fujiki-san listening and responding from time to time, his smile never fading.
Then already, they were leaving. It seemed their conversation lasted for only minutes but in truth, hours has passed. And then came what Yuto dreaded, or maybe what he had hoped, he wasn't sure: the Fujikis will be adopting him.
After their first visit, the Fujikis now frequent the orphanage. Sometimes they will both come, sometimes it's just Fujiki-okusan, who insisted that Yuto call her Yukie-bachan, but mostly it's just Naohito-san, Fujiki-san, who Yuto felt most comfortable with. There was just something about him that makes one feel at east. Even Hosho-san, Yuto reflected, seems to brighten up whenever he's around.
Every now and then, they will bring in some gifts. Not just for Yuto, but for the other orphans as well. In no time, everyone was anticipating their visits, including Yuto.
"Why do you want to adopt me?" Yuto had asked during one of Yukie-bachan’s visits.
“Because we're like you… We don't do this as a charity work you know. Well, not entirely.” She said mysteriously.
On his birthday, Naohito-san came with a birthday cake.
“Happy birthday, you’re a young man now.” Naohito-san said, smiling at Yuto.
He returned the smile, “Thank you, Naohito-san.”
“I know we’ve not really known each other for a long time but, if you let me,” he said cautiously, “I thought I wanted to greet you today, not as a friend, but as a father.”
Yuto didn’t answer at once.
He smiled at the older man. “I don’t really know how to feel about that. I don't really remember my dad. I don’t know how I should feel when a dad give me a birthday gift."
Yuto didn’t know what to expect but he was sure it wasn’t a chuckle.
“That's me as well.” Naohito-san said. “I grew up with my grandparents. But I know how it feels to have a dad. When I’m looking at my daughters and sons, I feel like I know what it feels to have a dad. And I want you to feel that, too.”
For the first time in so many years, Yuto smiled then. He didn't understand, but somehow he knew that it really did happen. He really felt he had a dad.
Nine months passed by very quickly, and already, Yukie-bachan, and Naohito-san was in front of him, waiting for him to get on to their car.
He was leaving the orphanage. He felt a mixture of feelings as he slowly walked towards them. With each step he took, he felt something heavy being lifted from his chest. Somehow, it felt right. It felt like this was how it was suppose to happen. It was as if he was finally going to somewhere he belonged. He was finally going home.
As he got on the car, his head felt a bit dizzy. He felt like this had happened before, as if in a memory or in a dream. He shook his head and smiled reassuringly at Naohito-san, who had looked at him in worry.
The car engine started, and slowly the car moved away from the orphanage until Yuto couldn't see it anymore.
---
Yuto woke with a start. The first thing he saw was Naohito-san's smiling face swimming in front of him.
"Yuto-kun, we're here."
Yuto groggily stood up. He gaped at the house --or more like-- manor in front of him.
"Welcome to your new home." Naohito-san said, tapping him at the back.
