Yamada's POV

I smiled as I looked around the room, happy and a little giddy. I haven't seen everyone together for a very very very long time.

It was like nothing changed. Like tomorrow we might be back at school for our classes.
Everyone was still the same. Looked a little older (just a little) maybe, but other than that…
Just as Asami started talking about her work in Paris, the door opened and everyone looked at it to see Mariya coming through it.

In just three seconds, the room were filled with squeals as the girls stood up and rushed to Mariya exchanging hugs.

The rest of us (the boys) also stood up and went closer to them at a slower pace. I think Non-chan is actually crying. I couldn't help but chuckle.

When finally the squealing died down, Mariya turned to the boys and gave us a smile. She looked at me then came for a hug. I laugh as she squeezed. But she let go quickly and moved in to Mirai, who I realized was behind me.

Mirai wasn't squealing but she looked very happy to see Mariya. They hugged a lot longer than the others. They really missed each other.

I remember how they were during our first year in Horikoshi. They had been friends since their Seigi no Mikata. Me, I've been friends with Mirai since our TGQ SP and with Mariya since our Scrap Teacher. It wasn't much unexpected that we three became closer when we became classmates. The three of us were inseparable. Others might think it's a bit weird that I'm closer to them than the boys, but it's true. They kinda remind me of my sisters so I was a bit drawn to them.

During those peaceful and stress-free (almost) days of my life, it's always been the three of us together.

But then, the scandal happened. All those exaggerated rumors spread and Mariya had to leave Horikoshi to avoid any more problems.

It isn't a big deal with me, or Mariya or our friends to be seen together. We're friends; it's what was normal for us. But then again, I guess it's enough to sell a tabloid or something.

We tried to move on. Mariya seemed to be fine in Yakumo, and it wasn't like we stopped communicating.  Mirai was particularly disappointed, but she understands more than well how it is to be in the entertainment industry.

Life went on, and even with Mariya gone, Mirai and I still hang out. So the trio was reduced to a duo--with Miki joining us every now and then.

It was like nothing change for the duration of our first year in Horikoshi but then summer came and we didn't see each other for months (seeing her on television and me her doesn't count), and when the new school year came around, everything was just different. She became a bit distant. She didn't talk to me much anymore. She stopped hanging out with me and instead go everywhere with Umika and Suzuka in tow.

I never knew why. Mariya seems to know (I called her and asked), but she didn't tell me.

And then the bickering started. I don't know what I did, but she was just so antagonistic towards me. She always snaps at me and I got tired of the cold treatment so I started snapping back at her. The funny thing was that it never really got into anything serious. And there are times when she returns to being her normal, nice and sweet Mirai (when we're alone, usually). And it just became a routine that we were like that: bickering when surrounded by friends, best friends when it's just us.

And it drove me insane. Just when I wanted… well, more. I got less.

We went back to our seats. We reserved the whole restaurant for tonight and tomorrow morning our unofficial reunion so it was just us.  We were in Prince Hotel and we also reserved rooms for the night.

"Sorry I'm late." Mariya called at large.

"At least you made it." Ayano said, smiling at her. There were some who weren't here. Haruka --who's in America right now--and Umika. I don't really know what happened to her.

They started talking again, and I just sat there, listening to and laughing with them. After a while, we ordered food and then went back to chatting. Everyone just have so many interesting stories.

We were served with our drinks and I noticed Mirai took a bottle of beer, put some on her glass and drank it in one gulp. I stared at her. Thinking about it, she hasn't said anything to contribute to our chat since she arrived. And looking closer, she looked really down. She was smiling, and seems to be listening to everyone, but she didn't win Best Actress for God knows how many times for nothing. She can't fool me, though.

She looked at me with a raised brow.

"What?" She snapped.

I frowned. "What's your problem?" I snapped back.

"You're the one who's staring." She retaliated, looking annoyed.

Suddenly, the others started laughing and I realized everyone had stopped talking to watch us.

Yuto was grinning at us fondly. "Nothing's really changed." He said wistfully. And then she turned to face Nozomi and with a teasing grin said, "Well, maybe except for Non-chan's surname."

Neither Mirai nor I commented. It wasn't needed, anyway because everyone was distracted to the other issue.

"And her and Shougo's civil status, don't forget." Hayato added, also with a teasing tone.

"That was really sneaky, you two." Rima said. "We have to find out in the newspaper."

"It wasn't like you didn't know we've been thinking about it." Shougo tried to say.

"It's still sneaky." Mika said. "You didn't even tell me." She said with a pout.

"It… it was a bit of an in-the-moment thing…" Nozomi said sheepishly.

"And we actually thought it was Yuto who'd marry first." Nako suddenly said and eyes turned to Yuto and some to Suzuka. I find myself looking at Suzuka. They've been together through most our high school life but they broke up after graduation. What's interesting is that both of them have been single ever since.

"Well, if you did suddenly decide to marry, don't do a ShouZomi, will you?" Shouhei said with a laugh.

"Yeah, whatever." Yuto just said. He looked somewhat uncomfortable and I saw him sneak a glance at Suzuka, who was determinedly not looking at him.

"Seems Umika's another one who might change their civil status soon." Chielu commented, looking at the vacant seat in front of her.

Chinen snorted and Jingi turned to him. "What?"

"She's not here because her stupid boyfriend doesn't want her here. If I say so myself, he's not really good for Umi-chan." Chii said, looking disgusted.

I shared a look with Yuto but he just shook his head in exasperation. Chii has always act crossed when subject about Umika and her boyfriend is brought up.

"Well, I don't think I can hide it much longer." Mariya suddenly said at the silence following Chii's outburst.

Everyone looked at her and she raised her left hand. "Misaki proposed. We're getting married!" She said excitedly. Some of the girls actually gaped and the squealing started once more. Once again, I could see Non-chan crying. This time, Shougo was holding her. I shook my head, grinning. Hormones.

I stood up and held my glass to Mariya, "Congratulations." I said.

The others followed and we made a toast.

The food arrived and everyone started chatting up each other. I sat back and once more looked at everyone and how they changed (or not change).

I saw from the corner of my eye, Mirai gulping another glass of beer. I looked at her openly but she wasn't looking at me. She wasn't talking to anyone either.

I frowned at her.

"Are you okay?" I asked her, moving closer. She was right beside me.

She looked at me then down her empty plate and slowly nodded.

I sighed, feeling helpless, but I accepted what she said (not that I believe it). I didn't know what else to do but watch her.

After some more laughs, Mirai stood up and excused herself. She hasn't even eaten.

Everyone went silent as we watch her go.

When I turned back to the table, Saaya was glaring at me.

"Mirai's probably tired." Suzuka suddenly said. "She's been stressed with work as of late."

"That's true." Kamiki followed up. "It's a miracle she was able to come tonight."

Most seems to accept this and the others returned to their food and their chats. I couldn't help but feel worried, though.

Mariya had then sat down Mirai's seat, besides me. She started filling up her plate with food. I realized they were Mirai's favorite foods.

"Yama-chan, you should probably take this to her." She told me.

"Why me?" I asked; a little panicked. I am worried, but I don't really know how to deal with a Mirai like that.

"It's probably your fault why she left." She said indifferently. I looked at her questioningly.

"What did I do?" I asked her.

"It's probably the other way around." She said cryptically.

"Huh?"

"Just go and take this to her." She insisted.

Suzuka approached us as well and gave me a card. "Here's a key to our room. We're up in room 927." She said.

I didn't have a choice but to go up, plate in hand.

I was on the 9th floor quickly and I went straight to their room. I knocked a few times and opened the door.

“Mirai?” I called out.

No answer.

I stepped in and placed the plate on the table.

“Mirai, you here?” I asked once more.

Still no answer. Sighing, I made my way to the bedroom, still calling her name.

When I peaked in the bedroom, she answers, “Why are you here?”

She was lying down one of the beds.

“I brought you food. You haven’t eaten.” I said, ignoring her tone.

“I didn’t tell you to do that.” She said, still in her snappish tone.

“Don’t I even get a 'thank you'?” I asked.

“For annoying me? No.” She said coldly, not even turning to face me.

I got angry then. “What is your problem? Here I am, worried about you and all you do is jab at me.”

“You.” She suddenly said.

“What?” I asked, confused.

“You’re my problem.” She said, finally facing me, but only to give me a glare.

“Me? What did I do?” I asked her, bewildered.

She huffed.

“It's been ten years.” Mirai said. I still wasn’t getting what the problem is.

“We're alone now, but still you won't even kiss me.” She said so very softly I thought I might have imagined it. But I didn’t.

I looked at her as she turned her back on me. I didn’t miss her blushing face.

It felt like someone clogged me in the head. I felt lightheaded, and insanely happy.

Mirai is not looking at me, though. I try to say something, but Mirai started speaking again.

“Sorry. I think I've drank too much beer. Never mind. I'm really tired. Thanks for bringing me food but I'm not hungry.” She said and she wrapped herself with the comforter, hiding from me.

“Mirai.” I called.

“Good night.” She said.

“Mirai. I think we need to talk.” I try to say.

She didn’t reply. I stepped in the bedroom and approach her bed.

“Mirai.”

Still nothing.

I sat down her bed and try to make her face me.

“Mirai.”

“Go away.” She said in a muffled voice.

I couldn’t help it. I laughed. I was just happy and relieved and a bit high. I had the urge to cry or laugh. I took laugh.

Finally, Mirai sat up, but it was to hit me on the shoulder.

“What's so funny?!” She asked, face angry and blotchy.

I stopped laughing at once.

“Are you crying?” I asked; a little alarmed.

“Why would I cry?” She said and turned her back on me once more.

“There's nothing funny.” I said softly, answering her question. “I'm just happy.” I said.

I pulled her and made her face me. She really was crying. I tried to wipe away her tears and I leaned in and kiss her.

“I've always loved you.” I told her.

But then she hit me again.

“Ow, what was that for?!” I asked, massaging my shoulder. It really hurts.

“You took too damn long!” She told me with another hit.

“Well, you could have said something as well. Uhm, you do…” I tried to ask.

“Yes, stupid. Obviously. But I was waiting for you…” She trailed off, blushing.

“Sorry.” I said.

She frowned at me.

“Ten long years.” She said with a pout.

“Okay, what will I do so you could forgive me?”

She didn’t say anything but just pout.

Grinning, I leaned in for another kiss.

When I pulled away she said.

“I still haven't forgiven you.” She said, with a small grudging smile.

“Till you forgive me then.” I declared and leaned in for another one.

----

“Yama-chan's gone for long now.” Yuto commented.

“I bet some people would change their civil status soon, as well.” Chielu said with a laugh.

“Mariya, can I room with you? I don’t think it’s a good idea to go up to our room.” Suzuka said with a grin.

“Sorry, I’m rooming with Mariya.” Asami answered. “Yuto’s rooming with Yama-chan, why don’t you just room with him?” She said with a mischievous grin.
