-

Umi was still smiling as they made their way out of the school. Daichi couldn't help but be glad for her. She must be really excited to see her niichan now.

They strolled along the busy streets silently. Umi was looking everywhere, openly astonished.

"You've really been away for very long, huh." He commented.

She nodded. "It's so lively here." She said.

She stopped abruptly when they passed by the toy store. She was looking at the plushies.

"Wanna go in?" Daichi asked.

She nodded with a big smile.

-

"Are you sure that's her?" Kinoo asked.

"Positive." The other guy said, smirking.

"Well, let's go then."

-

Daichi followed Umi as she made a beeline for the stuffed animals. She seems fond of stuffed toys.

"Wah, kawaii." She gushed, walking in another aisle. "It's a koala, look." She called.

Daichi followed and looked. "Yeah, it's really cute." He said sincerely.

"Koalas are really cute but they can also be mischievous." She said, taking one of the stuffed koalas in her hand and taking a closer look.

"Have you seen a real one, then?" He asked her.

"Hai. There are many back at home." Umi said; a bit distracted with the toys.

Daichi's eyes widen. "Home? You... you didn't live in Australia, did you?" He asked, surprised.

"Hai. I've been there since I was ten." She said, looking at him.

"I wanted to go there! I was supposed to go before but I couldn't. I wanted to see the koalas." Daichi couldn't help but say. "Umi-san is so lucky!"

"I guess so." Umi said shyly. "And it's Mirai."

"Eh?" Daichi asked, confused.

"'Umi' is just my screen name. My real name is Fuji Mirai. You can call me Mirai if you want to." She said pleasantly.

Daichi grinned. "Then call me Daichi."

Umi--Mirai looked surprised for a second but then she smiled and nodded.

Just then a little girl, who didn't seem to be looking at where she was running, bumped into Mirai. She toppled back and started crying.

Mirai had immediately crouched down to the girl and helped her up.

She started rubbing her hand to the girl's knee and chanted. "Pain, pain, go away!"

Daichi felt as if it was déjà vu. An image of his mom doing the exact same thing to him years ago flashed on his mind.

The girl started calming down just when her mom had approached them. The mom scooped her daughter up thanking Mirai as they go.

Daichi couldn't really understand why he couldn't look straight at Mirai's eyes just then.

-

The doorbell to Suzuki's apartment rang for the second time and Kurahashi Umi hurried to get the door.

With a smile, she opened it.

"Konnichiwa." Kobayashi Kouji greeted.

"Kobayashi-kun."

"Is Suzuki-kun here?" He asked.

"Daichi went out with Umi-chan." Umi said. "But I expect they're on their way back by now."

"Oh, is it okay if I waited for them?" Kobayashi asked.

"Of course. Come in."

-

Daichi handed Mirai the plastic bag without looking at her. He felt her looked at him, no doubt perplexed. They were back out the street, making their way back to Suzuki's home.

"It's for you." He said hastily.

"Oh." She said softly. "Thank you."

Daichi shook his head, smiling. Still, he didn't look at her. He just felt awkward somehow.

Mirai opened the small plastic bag and smiled at the stuffed koala cellphone strap.

"It's so cute!" She told Daichi. Daichi just shrugged, smiling.

He felt as if he almost dropped his heart when Mirai suddenly took hold of his hand. And, unavoidably, he looked at her.

"I want you to have this in exchange." She said, and only then did he realize that she had held his hand so she could strap a silver bracelet on his wrist.

Looking at it closely, he realized it had a koala pendant.

"I bought it in Australia. It's also a koala." She said, beaming.

"Ah, you didn't have to." Daichi said, more awkward than before. It didn't escape his notice that this bracelet was definitely more expensive than his cellphone strap.

"Please take it. I really want you to have it." She insisted.

Daichi slowly nodded, and smiled. "Thanks."

They walked, with Mirai still looking all around and with Daichi staring down at his new bracelet, grinning stupidly.

Mirai's scream was the last thing he heard before everything went black.

-

Daichi slowly opened his eyes. He feels as if his head will split into two. He hates headaches.

Groggily, he tried to sit up. He felt disconcerted but things were starting to come to him.

One, he was in some kind of warehouse.

Two, his hands are all tied up on his back.

Three, he was leaning into something soft.

Four, that something soft turned out to be Mirai. And she lay unconscious, besides him.

Five, he can hear someone talking.

He squinted his eyes and could swear he can see blonde hair.

'Kinoo.'

-

"Suzuki-san--I mean, Kurahashi-san, isn't it already late?" Kobayashi said. "Shouldn't they be home by now?" He asked. He had actually already tried to call Suzuki but he wasn't answering his phone.

"That's true." Umi said, looking a bit worried.

"Suzuki-kun isn't picking up." Kobayashi said, gesturing at his phone.

"Can you try calling Umi-chan? I have her number here."

'She must have bought a new phone.' Kobayashi thought, his mom had given her what they thought Umi's number was. He had also already tried calling that number. 'She's really determined not to be found.'

-

Mifune had just stepped out of the showers when his phone rang. He dried his hand with a towel and answered his phone.

"Hello?"

"Kengo."

Mifune knew who the voice belonged to at once.

"Handa." He said calmly, though he was frowning.

"How are you?" Handa said mockingly. "How's New York? How's the training going on?"

"What do you want?" Mifune said impatiently.

"Now, now, we can talk, can't we? I'm not bothering your training or something, aren't I? Surely a short talk with an old friend can be squished in your busy schedule." Handa said, tauntingly.

"Cut the crap." Mifune said simply.

And then Handa started laughing. He knew this was bad news.

"Mifune," He said, "Why didn't you tell me you have a very pretty little sister?"

He felt as if he had been splashed with cold water. He didn't respond. He didn't know how to respond.

"Why so quiet, Mifune? Are you perhaps worried about your sister? You don't have to. I'm taking good care of her. But of course, if you want to take her back, I'll give her to you. Only, you should come in person, it's only proper, wouldn't you say? We're in the warehouse by Sea King High." Handa said. And with that, Handa ended the call.

Mifune growled in frustration. Handa was still trying to stop him from being a pro. It was a low blow this time, though, using his sister like that.

He was distracted when his phone rang once more. It was a message from Handa this time. Opening it, he found a picture attached to it. It was a picture of a girl-- of his sister, tied up and unconscious. He didn't even know how she looked like until then. But as he looked closer, he swore he could see some resemblance of her and their mother. This was his sister. It still felt unreal, somehow. He gripped his phone in some relief as he realized for the first time.

"Suzuki's with her."

-

Kobayashi literally jumped when his phone rang. He had been running around with the others-- looking for Suzuki, that  the unexpected sound shook him. Clumsily, he took out his phone and answered immediately. They were desperate for news.

"Kobayashi." Mifune's fierce voiced said from the other line.

"Mifune-senpai!"

"Handa have Suzuki and my sister. They're in the warehouse close to the school." He said hastily.

"Er, you know about your sister?" Kobayashi asked, a bit nervous.

"Kanbe-sensei told me." He said simply. "Call Goro, and get them back. I'll get the next flight to Japan." He said, and Kobayashi was a bit amazed to hear Mifune-senpai's panicked voice.

"No." He said, deciding quickly. "Senpai, you should focus on the competition. We'll get them back ourselves. I promise that as the new leader of Sea King." He declared.

Mifune was quiet for a while.

And then he said, more calmly now, "Alright. I'll give you till morning. If you still haven't got them, I'll return to Japan."

"Got it." Kobayashi said, confidently. "And senpai, don't start packing."

He ended the call and returned his phone on his pocket.

Wanikawa, Hyouzoka, Habu and Zou-san all looked at him expectantly.

And then he started panicking. "Why did I say that? We can't fight Handa-san! How can we get them before morning? We'll be dead. I'll be dead, if not by Handa then by Mifune-senpai!"

Wanikawa sighed in exasperation and slapped Kobayashi.

"Where are they??" He asked pointedly.

"Warehouse by the school." Kobayashi said.

-

Mirai blinked groggily as she came to. "Daichi?"

"Mirai, are you okay?" Daichi asked worriedly.

"Bit dizzy." She said; squeezing her eyes shot.

"Where are we?" She asked. Her eyes fluttered opened as she realized her hands are tied up.

"I don't know where we are, sorry." Daichi said, besides her. He too, was tied up.

"Who are these people?" Mirai asked anxiously. She was feeling scared now. She was just thankful that she was at least, not alone.

"Handa." Daichi said grimly. "He's your brother's enemy. He must have found out you're his sister..?"

"My brother's enemy?" She asked, aghast.

Daichi frowned but nodded. "He won't stop at nothing to keep your brother from becoming pro."

"Why would he do that?" She asked.

"I don't really know the full story, but I guess he's jealous of him. I overheard him talking to your brother on the phone. He's baiting him so he would go back and miss the competition." Daichi said grimly.

"We can't let that happen!" Mirai said, panicky.

Daichi didn't respond. He didn't know what to do in this case.

"Daichi!" Mirai whispered urgently. "My dagger! Can you get my dagger? It's in my pocket." She said.

Though still a bit confused, Daichi nodded and moved cautiously so that his hand could get Mirai's keychain from her left pocket. When he got it, he moved carefully to pass it on Mirai's hand.

Mirai carefully removed the sheath. "Move your hands closer to mine, again." She ordered Daichi.

Daichi obliged. "Your keychain is a real dagger?" He asked bemusedly.

"Yeah. Only very small. I never really thought it would come handy." She said as she saw through Daichi's rope. In just a few minutes, Daichi was already released. He took the dagger and started on Mirai's rope.

When they were both free, they had moved cautiously away from the place they could hear voices. They were able to get round the warehouse swiftly. And Daichi finally realized where they were. But just when they'd reached the exit, a tall and broad figure stood in their way.

"Handa." Daichi acknowledged grimly. And then he blinked and started laughing.

"Daichi?" Mirai had called looking at him worriedly. She followed his gaze and in another second, started laughing as well.

"Gosh, your face never gets old." Daichi said, laughing out loud. It was just hilarious because other than the fact that he looks like a panda, he was wearing a chin curtain--obviously to protect his weakness-- but it just made him look like, "A panda with a beard." Daichi said and continued to laugh.

Handa glowered at them and gestured for his henchmen to capture them.

Before Kinoo could even come three feet near Mirai though, he had been sent flying to the other side.

"Don't touch her!" Daichi growled, all humor forgotten. And all of the others started attacking him at once. He moved suavely, dodging punches and throwing his own as they come.

"Mirai." He panted as he dodged another punch. "Go. They're after you!" He said but just then he received a kick in his gut.

"Daichi!" Mirai called, worriedly.

"Run!" He tried to say. Mirai didn't know what to do. She knew he had a point, but she can't just leave him.

As Daichi tried to stand up once more, he heard a scream the chilled his bones.

-

Kobayashi, Wanikawa, Hyouzoka, Habu and Zou-san all turned as they heard the muffled scream.

"That's Umi-chan's voice!" Kobayashi said, and as one, they ran to where the voice came from.

-

Daichi threw one last uppercut and turned to where Mirai was.

It was to see her in Handa's clutches. He looked smug as if he had already won, and frankly Daichi didn't know what move to make. He had thought the chin curtain was hilarious earlier, but it can really be a problem. Where else can he hit if he'd blocked all acupuncture points and found a way to protect the only spot without?

He tried desperately to form a plan. Maybe surprised him, somehow? Just so he would let go of Mirai. Deciding for a moment, he readied himself. But just as he was about to attack Handa, Mirai started thrashing around and as Handa's grip loosen, Mirai took the chance and kicked him in his crotch.

Daichi blinked, as Handa lets go of Mirai completely. Daichi supposed there were no acupuncture point there. Adrenalin still rushing through his veins, he rushed to Mirai, afraid Handa would attack her in retaliation.

He wasn't wrong. As he made a grab for her once more, Daichi placed himself in between them, covering Mirai. Instead of getting a hold of Mirai, Handa's hand had grabbed onto Daichi's wrist and in all the confusion, he pulled and Daichi's new koala bracelet snapped in two.

Eyes wide, Daichi watch, as if in slow motion as the two pieces fell to the ground with a resounding clink.

There was a pause while Daichi stared at his bracelet.

It was then that Kobayashi and the gang finally arrived. They were all confused as to what happened. Surely it was finished, and they won. But why was Daichi not moving?

Handa was almost out, but he watched warily as Daichi finally moved, crouching down to his bracelet.

Looking berserk, he growled. "She gave that to me!" He shouted. "And it was from Australia!" With murder in his eyes, Daichi charged to the almost unconscious Handa.

"KOALA--" His friends made movements to stop him. But they all stopped in their track as they saw what was happening.

"The koala..." Kobayashi said.

"is pink." Wanikawa finished, gaping.

"PUNCH!"

-

Daichi woke up feeling lightheaded. He opened his eyes blearily and saw their ceiling. He slowly sat up. As he moved he heard shuffling from his side. Glancing sideways, he expected to see his mom and so was jolted when he realized it was Mirai sleeping besides him.

"Oh, you're awake!" Daichi almost jumped at his mom's voice.

"Mom..." He said; still feeling confused. His mom was peering by the room's door.

"How are you feeling?" She asked.

"Awful." He said.

"Well, lie down for a bit more. You need to rest." His mom said. "Umi-chan told me about everything that's happened." She said and Daichi strained to listen. He can't seem to remember just then.

"About a guy named Panda--"

"Handa." Daichi said automatically. And he remembered in flashes of images.

"Handa? I think I definitely heard Umi-chan say 'Panda'..." She said distractedly. "Well, anyway, she told me about being taken by that Handa or Panda, about escaping and then you fighting. By the way, Minoru-san fixed your bracelet. It just needed a few new chains."

"It's fixed?"

"Yes. It's there." She said and pointed at Daichi's drawer.

"Apparently," Umi continued with her story. "You passed out after fighting with that Panda. Zou-san carried you home and he and your other friends went home right after. Though I think Hyouzoka-san wanted to stay to make sure you're okay..." She trailed off.

"Umi-chan treated your injuries." She continued to say. "And she took care of you all night. She was very worried."

"Yes, she can be a worrywart." He said, smiling at the sleeping figure besides him.

Daichi tensed as Mirai started stirring. With a groan, she sat bolt upright and first looked at the futon, and -realizing that he was already up- at Daichi.

"You're okay!" She said; relief in her tone. "Yokatta! I was worried sick!" And unexpectedly she lunged for him and hugged him.

It lasted as quickly as it came as in another second, Mirai seemed to realize what she'd done and she hastily pulled away.

"Uhm, I'm glad you're okay..." She said awkwardly.

"I'll live." Daichi said, grinning sheepishly.

-

Kobayashi blindly groped for his phone. It had started ringing even though he didn't set an alarm. When he still couldn't find it after a few minutes, he grudgingly sat up and started using his eyes. It turns out his phone was on the floor.

"Hello?" Kobayashi answered his phone groggily.

"Kobayashi." Recognition of the voice jolted him from sleep.

"Mifune-senpai." He said, sitting straight.

"Where are Suzuki and Mirai?" He asked.

"We got them back. Or rather, they managed to free themselves."

"Where are they?" He repeated.

"They're okay. We left them in Suzuki's apartment last night. I expect they're still asleep, it's still early here. But I can check if you want."

Kobayashi hung up, never realizing Mifune had already done so even before he stopped talking. He started changing his clothes, but then he stopped, realizing something.

"I already told him everything last night, right?" He mused out loud. "Did he forget?" He asked no one in particular.

-

The doorbell rang and Kurahashi Umi turned, instinctively looking at their door.

"Breakfast is ready." She called as she made her way to the door.

Daichi and Mirai had hastily stood up, both still feeling a bit awkward.

They both turned round when they heard heavy footsteps -which were definitely not Umi's- made its way to where they were.

It was a bit surreal to him standing in front of them.

"Mifune-senpai." Daichi said, astonished. "Weren't you supposed to be in New York right now?"

Mifune ignored him. He only had eyes for Mirai.

Awkwardly, he addressed her. "You're okay?"

She slowly nodded. Her eyes were wide and she too, wasn't looking away from her brother.

"I think a walk is in order." Umi suddenly intervened. "It's a great day. Kengo, you should definitely show her around." She said, pushing both out of the apartment.

-

Daichi and his mom walked out slowly, eyes following the two siblings. The two had already walked a good distance from the apartment, but they were still in plain view.

"It's great they can finally meet." Umi commented, watching as the two stopped just by the street tree.

"It is." Daichi said, also watching them, feeling so relieved.

Umi turned to his son a grinned.

"What?" Daichi asked; a bit disconcerted from his mom's smile.

"Nothing." She said innocently.

She turned back to the two siblings to see Mirai hugged his older brother. Kengo looked surprised, but he didn't pulled away and just started patting her back a bit awkwardly.

-

"Kobayashi said you ran away." Kengo said quietly.

"I needed to see you and mom." Mirai said, and then she looked at Kengo. "Mom never forgot about you. She regretted abandoning you, but she couldn't go back to you because of my grandfather. But she always talked about you. She told me stories about when you and she were still together. She loves you very much."

Silence engulfed them for a short while and then Kengo said, "Thank you for telling me all this." There was another pause. "But I think you should go back."

Mirai looked at him in surprise.

"You still have your work and your dad must be worried about you." He said and he added. "Kobayashi told me about the situation last night. He told me about your father and your grandfather. He said they're looking for you. They'd actually asked Kobayashi's family for help."

"I..." Mirai started, hesitatingly. "I thought I wanted to stay with you and mom. I wanted to stay here in Japan, at least, and not go back to Australia." She trailed off.

"You can't." Kengo said. "Not right now, at least. You have to go back. You still need your dad."

A look of hurt flash in Mirai's face and Kengo hurried with his words. "Of course you can visit anytime you want, but you can't stay for good."

"Why?" She asked, softly.

"I still have my goals. I want to be a pro boxer. And you still have yours. You want to be Hollywood actor, right?"

Mirai blinked. "How did you know that?"

He shrugged, "There were some magazines on the plane that have your interviews." He said and he returned to being serious. "I think we should focus on that for now."

Mirai looked at the ground, looking upset.

Kengo didn't really know what to do, so acting on instinct, he ruffled her hair. She looked up, surprised. "Let's prove to your grandfather that there are things you can achieve with hard work rather than with the family name."

And finally, Mirai nodded slowly, a small smile planted on her lips.

"And about mom's expenses," Kengo went on. "You shouldn't have paid for that. That's my job."

He guess he shouldn't have put it bluntly. Mirai's smile faded once more. So for the first time that day, he smiled. A real smile for his little sister. "Fine, I'll let you off this one time."

Mirai grinned back at him.

The moment was gone though, when Kengo's phone rang.

With a frown, he turned off his phone without answering.

"Who was that?" Mirai asked curiously.

"Probably my coach." Kengo said honestly.

There was a pause and Mirai said slowly. "You ran away."

Kengo shrugged coolly. "My little sister was in trouble." Unexpectedly, Kengo found that sentence a bit comforting. His little sister. He had a little sister.

Mirai grinned.

Kengo had the urge to scratch his head. He didn't really know how to act in front of her. He really needs to get used to the thought of being a big brother.

He sighed and with a small smile he said, "I have to go now, I think. It's a twelve hour flight from here to New York. I'm glad I get to see you."

Mirai nodded, albeit a bit sadly. "I'll be back by autumn. I'll be filming a movie."

"Then I'll see you."

Mirai nodded.

"Take care." Kengo said.

"Good luck!" Mirai said.

And giving his sister one last smile, "You too."

-

Daichi waited for Mirai as she walked back to the apartment.

"He's gone?" He asked her.

She nodded, "He still has that competition."

Daichi only nodded, not really knowing what else to say.

"Daichi." She said, looking a bit distracted. "Please call Kobayashi-san."

-

Kobayashi opened the window from his side of the car to watch the scene before him. Fuji-san was finally reunited with his daughter, Umi-chan. He smiled as Fuji-san hugged his daughter.

"You knew even as I first told you about her, exactly where she was." A soft voice commented from his side.

Kobayashi felt his face flush. "Yes, mama." He admitted.

"But you didn't tell me." She added.

"I... I already knew Umi-chan's story by then and I knew how determined she was to meet her mom and brother. I just didn't want to take that from her. I am only an outsider, after all. I just made sure that she was safe. I was planning to tell you when the right time comes. When she's ready to go, or at least when she already met her mom and brother." He said, looking down at his fingers.

There was a pause. And from the corner of his eyes, he saw his mom nodded.

"This is the first time you made a decision as opposed to mine." She said.

Kobayashi didn't dare look at his mom.

"You're finally starting to be independent." She said, suddenly. Kobayashi looked at her, surprised.

She smiled. "You’re passionate and considerate. And you made a good decision this time." She said approvingly.

Kobayashi grinned at her, feeling dazed.

"It was our pleasure to have you." Minoru said.

Daichi felt that usual awkward sensation and offered a hand for her to shake.

She took it with a smile and said. "Thank you, Daichi."

"No biggie." He said. And it happened so fast, it didn't register in his mind quickly: Mirai had kissed him on his cheek.

She was blushing when she pulled away, and hastily, she handed him an envelope.

Saying one last goodbye, she hurried to their car.

Daichi was still frozen as the car started moving.

When they were gone, Minoru and Umi turned to Daichi, grinning from ear to ear.

"You better start with your 200%, Daichi." His mom said slyly.

Daichi blushed and marched inside their home pointedly ignoring Minoru and his mom.

He went straight to his room. And feeling a bit nervous, he opened the envelope.

He blinked as he looked at a ten year old Mirai in her Seira costume.

She had given him an autograph. Daichi wanted to laugh. But there was something written on the side of the picture.

"It's a bit embarrassing to give you this, but your mom insisted that you'll like it. I hope you do."

Daichi sighed in amusement and defeat. He should have known it was his mom's idea.

Smiling, Daichi turned the picture over to see if there was something written in the back.

He blinked at what was attached there.

"Mom..." He called slowly.

Almost immediately, his mom came bounding in.

"What is it? It is a love letter?" She asked excitedly.

Daichi shook his head, still looking at the paper clutched in his hand.

"Then, what?"

And he showed her.

Grinning, he announced, "We're going to Australia!"

Attached at the back of the picture were three tickets to Australia.

-same goes with daichi and his mom, with being in character. i just thought his mom would by now be less tight, since she had remarried and had somehow let go of her son. and if umi/mirai is an ideal daughter to her, i think she'd like her for her son. daichi... i don't know if he's ooc here, i hope he's not. it's like this is the first time he ever cared for other girl besides his mom so i don't know how to make him act.

-daddy's girl... i read somewhere that this can run into families, er that it's highly possible that a daddy's girl's dad is a mama's boy and his mom in turn a daddy's girl... it's how they are raised. they modelled how they raised their child in turn to that..

-actors and other famous people ironically, usually develop SAD or social anxiety disorder. the same with mirai here, not being good in crowds and feeling uncomfortable with people watching her. i added these social issues since i think that's the theme of the whole drama.

-i wanted kobayashi's mom to praise him at least once. and i want kobayashi to finally have his own spine, seriously, it's frustrating.

-i feel bad about hyouzoka having a one-sided love like that. but bias aside, i just can't see daichi's character falling for her, since i think he sees her as one of the boys. i'm sure he cares for her deeply, but i don't think he thinks of her as a girl. it's called friendzoned. tsk tsk, daichi.

-ah, and there's no cosplay here, huh. completely forgot about that. lols.

-the acupuncture. i think there's none there... not sure though. lols.

-and the koala pendant and cellphone strap:
