"I'm on my way, hon. Sorry, the meeting took some time."

"It's okay mom, I just finished with my soccer practice." Aki answered to his phone. "I'm sorry for asking you to fetch me from school." He said as he opened the door to his classroom.

"It's okay, Aki. But I wanna ask about that, I thought you and Yuka-chan always go home together did something happen?" Aki barely heard his mom, though as he saw who was inside. He hastily turned around, hoping he wasn't noticed when his best friend called him.

"Yamada Akiyoshi!" She called and he knew, by the use of his full name, that he's in trouble.

Slowly, he turned back to see Yuka making her way to him, looking very annoyed indeed.

"Yeah?" He asked, trying to sound nonchalant.

"Why are you avoiding me?" She asked, sounding exasperated.

"I'm not avoiding you." Aki said hastily, entirely unconvincing.

She raised a brow at him.

"What?" He asked, feigning indignance.

"You trade cleaning duties with Sakamoto-kun so you wouldn't be alone with me." Yuka said.

"That's not true! I have rehearsals in the jimusho that day!" Aki said defensively.

"You didn't come during Aya-chan's birthday." She said, as if Aki didn't say anything.

"I wasn't feeling well!"

"You never eat lunch with me anymore."

"I have socc--"

"Machi-chan told me she saw you go to the rooftop to eat when you said you had soccer practice!" She said, looking mad now. "We haven't walked home together for days; we haven't talked in two weeks, at least! Why? Did I do something wrong? Do you hate me now?" She continued saying, looking downcast.

"Don't be silly..." Aki said.

"Then why?" Yuka asked, glaring at Aki.

Aki sighed, but looked down to the floor, not planning on answering.

"Is it because of Kyuubi? Because I almost lost him when we took him and Flame out for a walk? I'm really sorry."

"No, of course not!"

"Then is it because I wasn't able to come to your concert last week?"

"No, baka. I wouldn't hate you for that." Aki said, shaking his head.

"Then why?" Yuka asked, looking impatient.

"I told you, I wasn't avoiding you..." He said softly. "Well, uhm, I told Chii I'll meet him after practice so--"

"Oh no you don't." Yuka said as she grabbed onto Aki's wrist. "We're settling this now."

"Settle what?"

"Yamada Akiyoshi! You're really starting to get on my nerves!" Yuka said, now looking angry.

"Seriously, what is it? I've been so paranoid. Is it because of Risa-chan? Because I helped her confess to you even though I know you didn't like her? She just wanted you to know and I thought--"

"It's not that!" Aki said loudly. "Don't get me wrong, I don't like her in that way but I wouldn't hate her or you because of that. I'm thankful she felt that way." Aki said, with a faint blush on his face."I told you, Yuka, it's really nothing."

"It's not nothing! Tell me now or so help me, I'm calling your mom!" She threatened, actually taking her phone out.

"Don't do that, baka!" Aki said, grabbing hold of the hand holding the phone. "What does she have to do with this?" Aki said, looking away.

"The problem is, I don't know what this is! I---" Yuka trailed off, staring at Aki. "You.. you're lying."

"What?" Aki said, sounding confused, though he still wasn't looking at her.

"You're a bad liar. You always do that when you lie. You blush, look guilty for a second and then look away." She said, trying to look him in the eye.

"Mirai-bachan have something to do with this." She pondered.

"Yuka, stop--"

"The audition!" She suddenly said. "This is about the audition, isn't it?"

Aki suddenly blushed beet red.

"It is?? Why? Because of those rumors? Is that it?" Yuka asked, looking at Aki's face whose eyes are still trailed away from her.

He didn't reply and looked determined not to look at her. That was a 'yes' to Yuka.

Suddenly, Yuka laughed. And Aki just felt so embarrassed and annoyed.

"Don't laugh." He said, finally looking at her.

"It bothers you?" She asked.

"It doesn't bother you?" He retorted.

"Well, it might have if they haven't been shipping us since we were babies; even before that, really. Mom said there were people who were thrilled when they found out Yamada Mirai will be having a son and Nakajima Suzuka will be having a daughter." Yuka said.

Aki sighed and sat down in one of the chairs, "Why do they do that?" Aki burst out, sounding a little tired.

Yuka shrugged, taking a seat besides Aki. "I don't know... Maybe because our moms and dads are best friends. And you have to admit, we'd been together our whole life. Our families are always together, we went to the same preschool, same elementary and middle school. Now we're both studying in Horikoshi, both in 3D class. And we might get that lead roles for the movie adaptation of your mom's book. I guess they think we'd just eventually fall in love and get married or something." She said, chuckling a bit.

Aki frowned at that.

"Why does it bother you so much? Jeez, you avoided your best friend for two weeks because of that?"

"It make things complicated..." Aki said. "It's a bit awkward when you suddenly see a fanfiction or something on the internet... or when an annoying brother sees us and suddenly sing ridiculously love songs" Aki said, softly.

"I guess so." Yuka said. "It is weird thinking of us like that, ne... But I guess it wouldn't be bad..." Yuka trailed off and abruptly stopped. Aki had looked at her in surprise and upon their eyes meeting, they both blushed.

"What I meant is-" Yuka said hastily. "Well, my mom said it's better to marry a friend rather than a lover."

This time, Aki laughed. "Marry? Are you proposing to me?"

"No! Baka! I just meant, well, my mom meant that the most important thing in a relationship is friendship. She said that was how she and dad were. She said that after the initial attraction and 'honeymoon' stage, couple might stop being 'lovers' but if you're still friends, then you'll be able to face the future together.. or something like that. I don't really understand much." Yuka said, also laughing a bit.

"Yeah, you lost me at 'honeymoon'." Aki said, laughing along.

They were quiet for a while. And then Aki spoke once more.

"I... I just don't like the feeling of people watching you... people expecting something out of you." Aki confessed.

"I can relate to that." Yuka said, seriously. And then she smiled and said, "It's hard having celebrities for parents, ne?"

Aki laughed.

"But..." Yuka continued. "We can't change that."

"I guess so." Aki said.

"But Aki, if you avoid me again because of something silly like this, I'll really get mad." Yuka deadpanned.

Aki couldn't help but smile a little sadly.

"Promise you won't do that again." Yuka said.

"I promise." Aki said easily.

Yuka looked at him hard for a while, and then smiled. "So we're okay, right?"

"We were never 'not' okay. You were just paranoid!" Aki said, laughing.

"You made me!" Yuka said, indignant. "I'm not used of no-Aki in my life for so long!" Yuka said, smiling fondly.

Aki chuckled.

"You know, after we graduate, we'll have more work and it'd be hard to have talks like this again..." Aki said.

"I'm absolutely not worried about that." Yuka said, smiling cheekily. "It's the perk of being a Yamada and Nakajima. We're practically family."

Just then, the door opened and in came Kobayashi Saki. "Oh, good you're still here, Yuka-chan. Katsuragi-sensei wanted to ask you about the field trip fee." She said.

"Oh, okay, I'll be right there." Yuka said and Saki nodded. She turned back to Aki. "Well, I need to go."

"I'll wait for you by the gates, yeah?" Aki said.

Yuka beamed. "Un. I'll be quick." She answered and followed Saki out.

As she goes, Aki sighed and scratched his head, murmuring: "It wasn't because of something silly... what would you do if you found out what the world is saying iis actually coming true, and I'm falling in love with my best friend?"

----

Mirai smiled as she watched his son. It looked like he had forgotten all about her, but funnily enough, she wasn't bothered by this.

She felt someone pat her on the back and she turned to see the principal.

"Sensei." She called, out of habit.

The principal, who was their old math teacher smiled at her. "Those two reminds me of you and Yamada-kun." She said, smiling fondly.

Mirai laughed. "Yeah, I thought I'd seen that before."
