------------------

"You don't sleep."

That was what the adults always say to him.

He doesn't really understand it though. He does sleep. He actually sleeps a lot because he tire so very easily.

That's what his sister say, anyway. She said he was such a wimpy kid. And he can't really contradict it, because if he compare himself to his friends, yes, he does seem weaker than them. He can't run very fast and after just a while, he's already very exhausted.

"You don't sleep."

As he got older, they still say this, though something changed with their tone.

They held something. And he soon found out it was fear.

Because he's different from their children; different from them.

His sister said he's different because he's weak, but he knew that was just her roundabout way of trying to protect him.

He is different.

He never realized it until his mom told him a bedtime story about an old myth.

It wasn't a usual story to tell to a seven years old, but that's just his mom. She told him all about the first rulers of the eath, Uranus the god of sky, Gaia the goddess of the land, and their son, Cronus.

Cronus. He was the leader and the youngest of the first generation of Titans, divine descendants of Gaia, the earth, and Uranus, the sky. He overthrew his father and ruled during the mythological Golden Age. The king of heaven, the god of time.

The god of time.

That was what he could do, he realized. That was why he can sneak out the classroom without anyone noticing, that was why he doesn't get late going home even though he played until it was already pass curfew; that was why when he wakes up, it was as if time never passed.

Because it never did.

As he sleep, time sleep as well.

That was why he doesn't sleep. The adults were right.

After he realized that, his world became much different. Now he can revell on his powers. Because that's what it is.

'I am Cronus.' He thought. 'I am the King.'

But after a while, after the frenzy and excitement about what he could do, it had became dull for him.

He have so much time. Too much time that it got so boring.

It got boring even for just an eight years old like him.

But then he met this girl.

It was during summer and he had an accident. It was solely because of his poor judgement; an elapsed of logic and reason. He was walking home from school when it happened. He saw a stray black cat and for a while he followed it, just watching. Cats, that was one of the few things that can hold his interest for a time.

But as he followed it, he watcched as it took a turn to the road and the next thing he knew, he was running towards it before the car hits it.

He had stopped the time, but he was already brushed by the car. Surely, he would have been more severely injured if he hadn't stopped it, though. He was injured but it was only minor.

And he was glad that the cat was fine.

But this didn't sit well with his mom, and after taking one look at him, his family rushed him to the hospital.

That was where they met.

His doctor had said that he was okay but that he needed to stay for a night. They needed to be sure that he had no concussion.

Everyday life was boring for Ryouta, but it was even more so spending it at the hospital. Sometimes he wished time wouldn't sleep with him, so just then he could sleep and when he wakes up it'll be morning and he could go.

But when he woke up, after what felt like a day of sleep, it was still just 10 o'clock.

All the lights were out now, and his mom, besides him was fast asleep. Just as how she was before he slept.

Sighing, he cautiously stood up, not wanting to wake his mom up.

He silently walked to the door and exited the room.

He knew he might not really find anything interesting in the hospital, but he'd rather take his chances than bore to death in his hospital bed.

He had already went around the whole floor when he literally bumped to her.

The two of them, on the floor, stared at each other in shock.

She was a young girl, around his age, wearing a hospital gown and pulling with her a dextrose stand. She looked surprised, but still very calm. It was the first time for Ryouta to see someone as young as her with eyes like that of his mom. It was as if she was older than him by far, though she might even be younger than him.

Slowly, she had stood up and then offered a hand to him to help him up, too. Not really thinking much about it, Ryouta took her hand and stood up as well.

"Thank you." He said curtly.

She only nodded and then silence.

Ryouta didn't really know what to say, and he was really feeling awkward. He didn't know what to do and was considering just walking out but then she spoke.

"Why are you up?" She asked.

Ryouta looked at her.

"Why are you?" He asked back.

She shrugged. "I don't sleep." She said.

Ryouta blinked, very surprised. Is she perhaps, like him?

"You don't sleep?" He asked, wanting clarification.

She sighed. "Well, I don't want to." She allowed.

And for a moment, Ryouta felt very disappointed but he didn't let it show.

"Why don't you want to sleep?" He asked.

"It's such a waste of time." She said.

Ryouta didn't know what to say to that.

"Why are you up?" She asked again.

Ryouta just shrugged. Something was telling him he shouldn't say that he was just bored.

The girl seems to accept this and just nod. She then started walking again, pulling the dextrose stand with her.

He watched as she go. He watched as she knocked on a door and opened it. Vaguely, he heard a woman - an obaachan, it seems - call her.

"Harumi-chan!"

As he continued his walk around the hospital, he had found something else to do to spare time.

Ponder at her words.

He could not understand. Why was sleeping a waste of time?

He smiled as another thought occured to him. He was wrong. He had find something interesting.

He came back to his room when the sun was just rising and he pretended to sleep for his mom's sake. He made a show of waking up about five minutes after she did.

The doctor said he could go, and he was very grateful for that. He wished though, that he could see that girl again.

Days passed and some times he thought about her. It was rare though, it was only when he was very very bored.

He didn't expect they would be seeing each other again.

But they did, after about half a year later.

This time it was because Ryouta's dad collapsed.

He had remembered the girl of course, but the thought of seeing her there again--of her still being there was just silly.

Juiichi sneaked out at night, just as he did last time, though this time he used his powers so he wouldn't have to be cautious in moving. He had mastered his power more, he could control it better now.

He walked the same path he did last time. He stopped at exactly where he bumped into her. But there was no girl, no anyone.

He shook his head in exasperation, chiding himself for being silly.

He continued his walk, and just before he could go down to a lower floor, he heard a door open.

He instantly stopped the time. It was already a reflex.

He then looked at who made the noise. And finally he saw her.

She was still there. She looked just like how she did the last time he saw her.

Relaxing, he let time flow again.

It took a few seconds before she noticed him. There was a look of surprise on her face the moment she found him, but it quickly dissolve into recognition.

"You're here again." she said, acknowledging him.

Ryouta silently nodded, gaze never leaving her. "My dad fell sick."

And then there was something on her face again. Something he couldn't quite put a finger on.

"Is he okay?" She asked urgently and Juiichi was so surprised at the genuine concern in her eyes. Why? She doesn't even know her father.

"Yes." He found himself saying. "The doctor said it was just from overwork, they just wanted him overnight for observation."

He watched as relief show in the girl's face.

"Yokatta." She said, and for the first time he saw her smile.

He had so many questions he wanted to address her, but in the end he settled for, "You're out again." It wasn't really a question, more like a statement but it was what he was most interested in.

"Yes." She said, answering anyway.

"You go out every night?" He asked.

"Yes." She said again.

"Why?" He asked.

She shrugged. "Cause if I just stayed at my room I'll fall asleep. I'm not yet tired, so I want to do something."

"Why don't you want to sleep?" He asked. This was what he had pondered a lot about in the last few months.

She shrugged again, with a sort of --not really resignation-- but acceptance bordering on indifference. "Because I don't have enough time left and if I sleep when I don't have to, much time will be wasted."

He looked at her for a while, not really comprehending.

She seems to understand his silent question as she said, "I'm sick. Dying, you can say. I've been here since forever and I don't really expect I'll be able to go out." She said in that same indifferent tone.

And finally he found her previous words' meaning.

This was something new to him. Something foreign. He couldn't really understand what this girl would be thinking, could be feeling. This girl didn't have enough time to waste for sleep, he had all time he needed. The time was in his hands.

A girl with too little time, a boy with too much. They were polar opposites.

And that made her curious to him.

"Where are you going?" He asked her this time.

"To Satsuki-baachan." The girl said. He didn't really know why she was answering all his questions, he was glad of course, but she didn't have to.

"Can I come?" He asked.

She smiled again. "Sure, I'll go and introduce you."

As they started walking together, she asked, "What's your name?"

"Ryouta." He said at once. "And you're Harumi."

She nodded once, and they continued walking in silence until they reach the same room Harumi had gone to all those months ago.

When they were in front of the door, Harumi had knocked twice and then proceded on opening the door.

Ryouta could now see a very wide smile on her face.

"Baachan." She called in a whisper. The room was dark. There was no light, no sound.

"Baachan?" She called again, now confused.

Ryouta had then grope for the switch, and turned the light on.

The room was empty.

Pure surprised was seen on Harumi's face.

"Baachan?" She called again, looking very worried. The room was very clean. The bed was made, the sheets were new. It was as if the room was unoccupied.

"She's not here." Ryouta muttered, looking at Harumi in concern.

She was quiet for a while, just looking at the bed. Ryouta just watched. He didn't really know what happened. Maybe she transfered to another room? Maybe she was already healed and had gone home.

But then Harumi let out a sort of choke.

"Harumi?" He called, uncertain.

And for a moment, he saw a drop of water fall to the floor. Harumi then bend down and started shaking.

Ryouta panicked and rushed to her to see her crying.

"What's the matter?" He asked, not knowing what to do.

"B-baachan... Baachan... She's g-gone." She said, as her tears fell freely.

"Gone?"

She nodded and brought her hands to her face as she was completely taken by grief.

For a long while the two children just sat on the hospital floor. One crying and the other just watching, feeling very helpless. He wanted to do something, anything, though he didn't know what. He didn't dare move closer to her, it was as if she was so fragile at the moment. So different from the first time he saw her. But he didn't move away either, he didn't want to. He wanted to be there for her.

After a while, Harumi had become quiet, though tears still kept falling. Ryouta still didn't move from his place.

Then suddenly, she started talking again. In a very soft, very hoarse voice.

"Her time was up." She said and then she looked at him. "Will my time come soon as well?" She asked him and he could see fear in her eyes. He knew she must know that he couldn't answer her question but it was a sign of how much scared she was; that she was seeking reassurance to a complete stranger.

"No." He decided to tell her.

"How do you know?" She asked, surprised at his words.

"You're... you don't look like someone who's time will be up soon." He said.

"Neither did Baachan." She said, as more tears fell. "She looked so strong yesterday."

"You're different from her. It's not yet your time." He said.

She looked at him, perplexed though hanging on to his words.

"I won't let it be your time. It won't be soon." He said.

"How can you say that?" She asked, now really bewildered.

"I am Cronus." He said. "I'm the lord of time."

Harumi looked at him long and hard. Ryouta never looked away.

And finally, Harumi smiled at him. It was a small sad smile. As if she was thinking he was humoring him, but was thankful anyway.

He saw her close her eyes and grasp at her head. She was red from crying. He was sure she wasn't feeling very well.

"You look tired." He said, raising a hand to her cheek in a distracted way. "You're warm, too. You should rest."

She shook her head, and for a moment fear filled her eyes once more.

"I don't wanna sleep." She said.

"Sleep." He ordered. "I wont let time flow while you rest." He said.

She laughed. It was a rather half-hearted laugh, but he was glad she stopped crying.

"Thank you." She said softly. He didn't really know for what but he nodded.

"Watch over my time while I sleep." She said, with an exhausted voice.

"I will." He said softly.

Harumi had then leaned her head on his shoulder and immediately sleep took her as time stopped.

As he promised, Ryouta watched her as she slept. After a while, he had found himself brushing his hand through her hair, just like what her mom does when she lulls him to sleep.

----

Juuichi woke with a start.

He groaned, feeling very restless. It was that dream again.

It was a very confusing dream. It seemed very familiar, yet he it wasn't.

It was like a forgotten moment. A forgotten memory.

A secret of sort, engraved deep inside his heart.

A page of his life no one can ever rewrite.

Just close your eyes
The sun is going down
You'll be alright
No one can hurt you now

---------------------
AN:
-called it 'power' instead of 'SPEC' because he's a kid, no matter how dark his thoughts went. /whacked.
-so the Cronus part is the reason Juuichi is claiming he is the King in SPEC.
-it's a memory Shirota's character didn't erase, well at least didn't do it thoroughly, because it wasn't really very related to Saaya. /shot.
-i'm thinking of claiming this scene is the first time juuchi tried to stop the 'normal' time while bringing someone in 'his' time.
-i can really imagine 8 year olds who can think like this. it depends on their experiences, really. it's possible to be very mature at 8. my niece is 6 years old and she's really something. she said, 'let dad relax. he's been working so hard for us, so we can go to school and buy stuffs.w the least we could do is let him listen to his music in peace."

Thanks for reading~
