Yukito's POV
We met in kindergarten. We were best friends.
She always told me she loved my eyes. I didn't quite know why.
I was in love with her, so of course my face lit up immensely whenever she said it.
She was beautiful, kind, and extremely funny.
We'd be talking about nothing, and she'd turn to me and whisper, "I like your eyes."
One day, I was playing basketball, waiting for her to drive over to the field to have a game with me.
Suddenly, I got a phone call.
It was her mom. She was in a panic.
I couldn't quite understand what she was saying.
It sounded like, "Yukito, come quick! Ai, accident, Main Street! Blood. Come now!"
I had no clue what happened, so I ran to Main Street with my basketball shorts and tee-shirt on.
I saw Ai's mom helplessly crying, waiting for the ambulance to arrive.
I saw a totaled car, blood everywhere.
Then I saw her, Ai.
My heart stopped as I frantically ran over to her.
"Ai? Ai!" She was unconscious. I started crying.
I know it isn't very manly, but I couldn't help it.
Before I could say anymore, the medics took her away, the main source of blood coming from her head.
I went to the hospital that night. I went every night. In fact, the only time I left was to go out to eat, but that's it.
The doctors tried getting me to leave, but I refused.
It was all my fault.
If it wasn't for me, wanting to play basketball with her, she wouldn't be going through this.
It was already four days, and she hasn't woken up.
On the fifth day, I saw her eyes gently open.
"Ai?" I called.
She wasn't quite awake yet.
Suddenly, doctors came rushing in, telling me I had to wait outside.
I did, for a few hours.
One of the doctors finally came out saying,
"I understand that you're Ai's friend, Yukito-kun?"
"Yes," I whispered.
He bit his lip.
"She woke up, she's fine, but I'm afraid she has long term memory loss."
"Are you serious?" I almost shouted.
"I'm afraid so."
I didn't meet his gaze. I couldn't.
I wasn't going to say anything, so he spoke again.
"You can go see her if you want, but she doesn't remember anything, not even her mom."
I walked in, trembling in horror.
I saw her. She looked helpless as she slept.
I waited a few hours, until I saw her eyes opening gently again.
I expected doctors to run in, rushing me out.
Instead, she looked me straight in the eyes, and whispered,
"I don't know you, but I like your eyes."

I remembered that day, when you handed me my Teddy when it fell in the sand. That was the first time we met.
We met again, when we were five. You raced me down the playground slide.
We were ten then, I was afraid so you held my hand as we crossed the street.
Remember during my twelfth birthday? You didn't have a gift for me, but instead you promised to marry me when we got older.
At fourteen, you asked me out on our first date. I was so happy. I could tell you were, too.
We went to different schools during high school, but you still called me your girl. I worried at times, but you always showed me how much you cared for me in your own little ways.
When we were seventeen, in our anniversary, we were driving to the movies.
At midnight, after the movie, the car didn't see us.
In the morning, I woke up covered in blood; your blood. You were hugging me. You shielded me.
When I looked over, you were holding my hand.
I couldn't move at first, but I knew I have to. You weren't moving. You had a wound in your head. It was continuously bleeding.
I felt numb, though I knew I didn't have any injuries. You made sure of that.
Trying to keep my tears, I cried for help. I cried and cried, praying inside that you'll be safe.
Soon, someone came.
"He might not make it." The doctors told me in the hospital. I didn't believe them. I couldn't.
In the afternoon, they let me see you.
You were clean, your wounds wrapped, your clothes changed. You looked like you were just sleeping.
I went near your bed. I took your hand in mine.
I felt your hand twitch, I started calling your name.
"Ryuu..."
Slowly you opened your eyes. You saw me and then smiled.
"Kanon..." You said so very softly. "I love you." You told me for the first time.
"I love you, too." I said back, hugging you. I know you already knew that, but I wanted to hold you; to let you feel how much I feel for you.
I felt your hand wrapped around me as well. And then you made an audible sigh.
Suddenly your hands went loose.
In my arms, you left the world; took half of me with you.
'Cause in my heart, you'll forever be.
