Ryosuke released a sigh when he saw the time.
It was past 12AM. It was already May 10...
Both him and Mirai were now both 25 years old.
He wasn't really happy about that.
He wasn't able to make her dream come true.
He stood up and prepared to go out.
Once he was changed he came back to his drawer and took out a box.
He stared at it for a moment. He didn't know if it as the right gift at the current situation. Deciding for a moment, he took it and placed it in his pocket.
He went downstairs. He smiled as he imagined his mom there. She would have told him he looked handsome, as usual. He did miss living with his family.
He went out and got on his car. Mirai was just a few blocks away but he just felt like driving.
Five minutes in and he was already in front of her apartment.
He looked up to her floor. He knew she'd still be awake. Maybe even crying.
Ryosuke frowned. He knew that was his fault. They had fought earlier.
Ryosuke wasn't able to come to their date earlier because some of his senpais have dragged him out to drink. Ryosuke had tried to go sooner but his senpais were persuasive.
He had made her wait for how many hours but Mirai never stopped waiting.
She had been very mad when he had arrived. He tried to explain but she wouldn't listen. And then she brought up an old issue about one of his rumors. This angered Ryosuke and they ended up arguing.
They separated without making up and then Ryosuke found out from Yuto that Mirai was facing a new problem. Paparazzi pictures of Mirai changing has leaked and the media had making all sorts of rumors about it.
That was why she was on the edge... And Ryosuke had argued with her.
Ryosuke knew he didn't have a face to show her. But he also know he needs to apologize.
He took out his phone and dialed her number.
Three rings and she answered.
"Hello?"
Ryosuke frowned. Her voice was hoarse. She had been crying.
"I'm here..." Ryosuke said simply.
There was a pause.
"R-ryosuke... I thought..."
"I'll be there." He said.
"H-hai..." She said and Ryosuke could here her sniffing.
Ryosuke entered the apartment at once. He got on the elevator and pushed the 17th floor button.
A few minutes and he was in front of Mirai's door. He opened the door with his own spare key and went right in.
Mirai was there.
And he saw as another tear fell.
"Ryosuke..." She said and then she completely succumbed to tears. Ryosuke went to her and hugged her.
"Mirai... I'm so sorry... Sorry about earlier and about everything else." Ryosuke said.
Ryosuke felt her shook her head. "I-I'm sorry... it was your birthday and then I went and... I'm really sorry Ryosuke..."
Ryosuke hushed her, kissing her tears away.
"I'm so sorry... I wasn't myself... It just seems like everything wasn't going right and I was so worried something might have happened to you. I never meant what I said..." she continued.
"I know... I know... you don't have to be sorry. I was at fault, too. I was an insentive jerk. I'm sorry." Ryosuke said.
"S-sometimes I just wish we could be away from everything..." Mirai sobbed.
"Do you want to?" Ryosuke suddenly said,
Mirai stopped and looked at him in question.
"Do you want to leave? Go far away? Even just for today..." Ryosuke said.
"What are you saying, Ryosuke? We can't possbly go..." Mirai asked.
"You deserve a break. Even just at least on your birthday." Ryosuke said firmly.
"Come on." Ryosuke said standing up, and helping Mirai up as well. "Let's go somewhere we won't be recognized."
"Eh? Now?"
Ryosuke pointed at the clock. It was 1:11AM. "It's already your birthday."
"But what about work--"
But Ryosuke wasn't listening. He took her handbag, he knew where to find it.
He took out her phone and placed it gently on the table. He took out his own phone and place it besides Mirai's. And then he continued to pull Mirai out her apartment.
"Ryosuke!" She exclaimed. "You're not serious!"
He grinned. "Come on, give yourself a birthday gift." Ryosuke said.
"But I have so many responsibilities. You know that. I can't do this, Ryosuke." Mirai said.
"Well only be away for a day at most." Ryosuke said. "I think my mom would know what we must've did. She'll cover for us."
"But..."
"I think Chie-san wouldn't be mad. You do need to avoid the media at the moment, right?" Ryosuke insisted.
"But what about work? I'm guesting in Tensai Shimura Doubutsen today--"
"I'll call Aiba-kun. Then I'll just ask Yuto-kun or Inoo-chan to come instead." Ryosuke said.
"Ryosuke..." Mirai sighed. "You're really serious."
Ryosuke grinned at her, knowing he had won her over. "Let's be off."
Mirai just let him drag her away as a small smile crept to her face. Ryosuke is just stubbornly sweet like that.
They got on Ryosuke's car and he drove off. Half an hour later and they were at Narita Airport.
"Where exactly are we going?" Mirai asked Ryosuke. They only had their wallets with them, Mirai wasn't really sure this was a good idea.
"Somewhere near Japan but where we won't be recognized." Ryosuke said.
"We're going abroad?" Mirai asked, surprised.
"Yes. How about Malaysia?" Ryosuke asked, looking at the immediate flights. "There's also South Korea or Philippines... and there's also Singapore."
Mirai just shook her head in exasperation.
Ryosuke looked at her. "Come on, Mirai... go along with me this time." He said, pouting.
"Ryosuke..." She moaned.
"Please?" he said, pouting more.
Mirai sighed in resignation.. well, she was already dragged there.
"Fine." She said.
Ryosuke grinned and hugged her.
"So where do wanna go?" He asked her. Mirai looked at the flights.
Well, if they were really doing this then they better go all out. It was once in a lifetime.
"Haven't JUMP already had a concert in SIngapore and South Korea? You have fans there." Mirai said.
"Yeah, we might be recognized there. And Malaysia, you had a drama with a Malaysian actor right?" He said.
"Right." Mirai said. "So, Philippines?"
"Philippines it is."
Ryosuke had lined up for the ticket while Mirai sat and waited. They were sure this escape would be out in the open later in the morning, but they'll deal with that when the time comes. For now, they just wanted to be away from everything.
Everything went smoothly and quickly.
While waiting, Ryosuke had made those calls to Aiba-kun and Yuto-kun through the payphone. Aiba-kun was okay with it but Yuto-kun had been suspicious.
"What are you planning this time, Yama-chan? And why is it it's always me?" Yuto-kun had said a bit sleepily over the phone.
Ryosuke had just laugh it off and in the end, even though he wasn't given the whole story, he had agreed.
An hour later they were already getting on the plane. The flight would last approximately one hour. So that means they would arrive in the Philippines at aroud 3AM, well, 2AM since apparently, Philippine time is an hour late in compared to Japan time.
That was all set.
And then they'll just think of what's next by then.
Mirai sat by the window. She leaned on Ryosuke as the plane took off.
It was as if she was dreaming. She never imagined this happening. There was some sort of satisfaction as Tokyo became smaller and smaller.
Finally, she was away from the media... away from the scandal... from the critism. Away from everything. It was just her and Ryosuke.
"You should sleep." Ryosuke told her and Mirai happily obliged.
---
As expected, they had arrived in the Philippines at past 2AM, Philippine time.
It was refreshing that when they got inside the airport, no one was staring or looking twice at them.
Well okay, there was some but they didn't seem to recognize them. Maybe they were just surprised at their outfit. They were wearing thick clothes but it was really very warm in the Philippines.
"So, what now?" Mirai asked.
"Hmm," Ryosuke pondered out loud. "I couldn't think of anything since our plane landed."
Mirai smacked him playfully. He chuckled.
"The only Filipino words I know by heart is 'Salamat po' and 'Mahal ko kayo.'" he said. "But I know Filipinos are fluent in English."
"Okay... Do you know how to ask in English?" Mirai asked.
"Nope." Ryosuke said.
Mirai smack him again, both of them laughing.
"Think I shoul've brought Keito along?"
"No, you should've studied English instead of Korean." Mirai said, teasingly.
"Come on. We have to try or we'll just come right home." She said as she grabbed hold of his hand and pulled him towards the main desk.
"Hello." Mirai said to the lady in English. "Eto, need... questions..." She said rather lamely.
But the lady smiled at them and said, "Please wait a moment, Ma'am, Sir."
They had understood 'wait' and nodded. The lady left the desk and was back in a moment with a young man.
"Good morning. Can I help you?" The man asked, smiling graciously. He was fluent in Japanese.
That was a relief.
"Good morning." Mirai greeted in return. "Uhm, can we ask for information? We didn't have any plans in coming here. Can you recommend us to good places for our stay?"
"Ah, hai. There are many tourist spots here in the Philippines. How do you want to spend your vacation, ma'am? A tour around historical places? Beach, maybe? Coincidentally, it is currently summer in the Philippines." He said and it looks like he have asked this questions to tourists many times before.
Mirai looked at Ryosuke. "What do you think?"
He smiled. "Anywhere's fine with me. You decide, its your birthday."
Mirai smiled and thought. "Hmm.. I think I'd like to see the sea."
She turned to the man. "What beach do you recommend?"
The man smiled and had started advertising many beaches.
Ryosuke and Mirai had chosen Boracay. According to the man, the beach was known worldwide and Mirai had said she had heard of it before.
The man had offered to arrange everything for them. It seems they needed to ride another plane and to ride a boat after that to reach the island. The travel time would only take around two hours.
The man had also advised the two of them to change currencies for their stay.
The man really did arrange everything from their plane tickets to the island to hotel accomodation, to tour guide and even their plane tickets going back to Manila and back to Japan.
The man was a little surprised when they said they would only stay for a day and would go back tomorrow morning but he didn't comment.
While waiting, they had went to a shop in the airport called 'Duty Free' and brought their necessities. They also bought a bit of some other stuffs.
About an hour after, everything was already set.
"Wow, Philippines." Ryosuke had said. It was a good choice for a get-away.
They waited for their flight to Caticlan, as the man, Carl said. One hour of plane ride and then they'll be meeting with their tour guide and together they'll be riding a yatch for 20-30 minutes.
Their whole travel was a blur to them. They had fallen asleep right after riding the plane. Woke up when they arrived at their destination, meet with their tour guide, travel to the boat terminal by car, waited a bit for their yatch, fallen asleep during the ride, woken up for their hotel check in and fallen right asleep when they reached their room.
It was understandable though, as they hadn't had rest since the day before.
---
Ryosuke had opened his eyes when he heard movements.
He had almost forgotten they weren't in Japan anymore.
He sat up and saw Mirai outside their room, in the veranda.
He smiled and stood up as well.
The sun was very high. It must have been around noon. It was very hot when he had step outside.
He approached Mirai silently, wanting to surprise her.
He smiled at her figure before he had hugged her from the back.
And that was when Ryosuke noticed the beautiful scene in front of them.
The hotel was right by the shore so they had a very good view of the blue sea. It was really beautiful. The sand was white. Literally white. The sea was blue and was sparkling as if it was a very huge blue gem.
"Wow..." Ryosuke breathed.
Mirai smiled and turn her face sideways to Ryosuke.
"Beautiful, ne? Can't wait to join them." Mirai said pointing downwards. There were many tourists swimming by the shore.
"Let's get kicking then." Ryosuke said, stirring Mirai back to their room.
"But let's eat first, I'm starving." He said. Mirai laughed.
They had went downstairs in the first floor of the hotel. They had found their tour guide --well, more of a translator --- there. The travel agency is affiliated with the hotel, unsurprisingly.
Their tour guide had introduced herself as Marian. Ryosuke introduced the both of them and Marian had assumed they were husband and wife. Neither corrected her, though.
She had explained that they could eat at the hotel's restaurant or at other restaurant around the beach. They had chosen to just eat there.
There were many unfamiliar dishes to them. They tried those. They have ordered Ginataang Crab (crab cooked with Coconut milk, accoring to their tour guide), Tuna and Seashells with Cheese (Mirai's choice, obviously), Seaweed salad and Halo-halo for their dessert.
The food was good. Ryosuke particlarly like the crab. It was also interesting eating the seashell. They had to sip the innards. And the Halo-halo was really something as well.
They had finished their lunch at around 12 noon. And since Philippines was one hour late compared to Japan, they thought they were just in time.
They had rest for a bit and then they changed to their swimswear (they had bought some from the hotel) and proceeded to the beach.
The sand was very fine. The beach was really something. There were a lot of pople there. Lots of tourist like them, different races.
"Those are Koreans, right?" Ryosuke pointed.
Mirai pouted at him. "Don't start." She said.
Ryosuke laughed. "Only joking, Yamada-okusan."
Mirai blushed but grinned. She took his hands and pulled him towards the sea. "Come on, let's go for a swim."
They took a dip. The water was warm at shallow parts and very cool at deeper parts. They had stayed to one of the deeper parts.
"This feels great." Mirai said, floating. But then, Ryosuke splashed water at her.
She had stood up, smirking and laughing, and splashed revenge.
Ryosuke laughed and they had a splashing war.
Mirai attacked continuously, Ryosuke wasn't really able to get her. Mirai laughed.
And then suddenly Ryosuke took a dip and disappeared under the water.
It was very quiet for a while
He had resurfaced behind Mirai and had hugged her dragging her down the water with him.
The two of them resurfaced, laughing. It was very exhilarating. It was as if it was a new feeling, just the two of them there, relaxed; carefree and with no pretenses.
They had swam to much deeper parts after a while.
Mirai had clung on Ryosuke's back as Ryosuke walked through the sea. They had arrived at deeper more parts and Mirai's feet couldn't reach the sand anymore.
"Let's go back, Ryo-chan, it's getting deep." Mirai said.
Mirai didn't see Ryosuke's smirk.
And then suddenly Mirai wasn't holding onto anything anymore. Ryosuke had removed her hands from his neck and had let go of her.
Immediately, she reached for him again. Now she was hugging him from the front.
"What did you do that for!" She complained.
Ryosuke laughed and then smirked at her. "One thing first before we go back."
And then Ryosuke was kissing Mirai unlike he had ever kissed her before. Rational thinking fled as Mirai gave into the kiss.
It was pure bliss. Ryosuke tried to say everything he wanted to say to her in that one kiss.
Mirai had almost forgotten they were in the middle of the sea, she was very much fixated on their kiss.
She felt the desire that was in the kiss, the need, and dare she say the lust... the overwhelming love it contained.
Ryosuke broke the kiss and rest his forehead on Mirai's. He smiled at her.
She smiled back.
Words weren't needed.
Ryosuke hugged Mirai's small figure and then he looked at her again.
"And that's my birthday gift for this year." He said.
Mirai scrunched up his nose as a sort of pout and said, "I have a gift for you, you know. But I left it in Japan."
Ryosuke smirked. "It's okay I love this one anyway." He said as they made their way back to the shallower waters.
--
A while later, they had went to the shore to rest and to eat some snacks. There were really many stores along the shore.
That was when someone approached them.
It was a girl around fifteen.
"Are you Yamada Ryosuke and Shida Mirai?" She asked in Japanese. She looked like a local but it was obvious she knew them and she knew how to speak in Japanese, too, though not very fluently.
Ryosuke was thinking of a story but Mirai had went on and smiled at the young girl.
"Hai..." she answered her.
"Oh my God!" The girl said in English. "I'm a fan, can I take a photo with you?" She asked in Japanese.
Mirai smiled and nodded.
Next thing Ryosuke knew they were posing for pictures.
The girl had bowed at them in thanks. And then she had given them necklaces and said, "Happy Birthday to the two of you."
"So we have fans here as well..." Mirai said in wonder waving at the girl.
"It seems so." Ryosuke said, smiling at the necklace on his hand.
Marian-san had approached them then and recommended Parasailing tour since it was already the afternoon.
They had both agreed to it at once. The island was interesting, that was for sure.
They took a quick detour to their hotel room to change to something dry. Marian-san had told them they could go snorkeling so they still wore swimwear under their casual clothes. Mirai had also brought her newly bought camera.
Marian-san had lead them to a boat terminal where they saw the yatch they had riden on earlier and their tour started.
First they went to quiet beaches. It was as if it was just a picture. They were really beautiful sites. Mirai had took so many pictures. Then they went to shallower waters and one of the man from the yatch went down the ocean and took a sea urchin. They broke it apart and asked them to try it.
They were eaten raw, just like that.
Mirai hated raw and was hesitating but in the end, both of them took a taste. It was... unique. That was for sure.
They went to more sites. They even went to undisturbed parts.
Marian-san had recommended going inside a cave. She said there were many bats inside. They didn't much like this (Mirai in particular) so they skip that.
Last place they went to was called 'Ariel's Point.' It was a very nice place with volcanic caves, mangrove forests, turquoise coves... It was really a beauty.
Masks and vests on, they had excitedly went down the sea when Marian-san had said it was their snorkeling site.
It was very different looking at the sea from under. It was a different world.
It was very colorful and there were so many types of fishes. Different colors, different sizes, different shapes.
There were also huge shells. Especially at the deeper parts. They were very large Ryosuke was sure they weigh a ton. There were also jellyfishes to which Ryosuke had avoided, pulling Mirai with him. They had even spotted a baby tortoise.
It had felt that they had been there for hours. They were surprised to discover they had only been there for over an hour.
The sun was already setting as they cruise back. It was the best scene so far.
It was as if they were in a moviie. The sky was tinged with red and orange. The water was reflecting the sun. The sea was very calm. It was sparkling still, now it was as if there were gold scattered throughout the water.
Mirai had leaned on Ryosuke then and sighed in amazement.
Ryosuke placed an arm around her.
She gigled at that.
"What?" Ryosuke asked, smiling.
"Why does this feel like a honeymoon?" Mirai asked, laughing now.
Ryosuke smiled sadly.
Now it was Mirai's turn to look at him questioningly. "What is it?"
"I'm sorry I didn't keep my promise..." Ryosuke said.
"What promise?" Mirai asked, still smiling.
"Well, I didn't technically promise you... but I promised myself Ill make your dream come true... And now, we're both 25 years old... I've missed it." He said apologetically. Mirai wanted to marry at 24.
Mirai peck him on the lips. Ryosuke was surprised.
"It was a little girl's fairytale dream. I know both of us have other commitments. If you had asked me, I don't even know if I'll say yes." Mirai said. Ryosuke frowned.
"I'm not saying I don't want to." Mirai said quickly. "I do. I'd love it very much. But I know it wouldn't be good for work, right? I mean, I can wait. I already have my prince, it's only a little bit more wait." Mirai said vaguely.
Ryosuke was still frowning.
Mirai pinched his cheeks. "Don't pout like that!"
This didn't change Ryosuke's expression.
Mirai had started frowning sadly as well.
Ryosuke looked at her seriously.
"What if I can't wait anymore?" he asked softly.
Mirai looked at him.
Ryosuke's hand went to his pocket and then he took out a small box.
Mirai gasped, shocked.
Ryosuke opened the box. Surely, inside was a diamond ring.
"Let's get married, Mirai-chan."
Mirai was speechless. Ryosuke took her hand and put the ring on her finger. And then she took her hand and squished it.
"What do you say?" He asked.
Mirai only nodded, tears threathening to fall.
Ryosuke hugged her.
They arrived at the beach with the sun completely set. They had walked along the seashore for a while. Just walking, hands together. There was a comfortable silence. Having each other just then was enough. More than enough.
After that they had returned to their hotel and only ordered dinner to their room.
They had eaten silently as well and finished quickly. They were both exhausted and tomorrow morning they would be going back.
Right after eating they had prepared to sleep. Their room had two beds.
Mirai was the first one to call the night. Well, she reallly needs her rest, she'd need energy for tomorrow which surely will be a very busy day.
Ryosuke, on the other hand, had lied still on his bed.
It was as if they were there a long time now but at the same time it felt like it was too short
They will be going back. Back to the chaos, back to the scandals, back to the commitments, to the pretenses.
"Ryosuke..."
Ryosuke looked sideways to see Mirai still wide awake, looking at him from her bed.
"Hm?" He asked smiling softly.
Mirai pursed her lips for a while as if thinking.
And then she patted the space beside her, silently inviting him over.
Ryosuke smiled, stood up and obliged.
It was a wonder how earlier the both of them couldn't sleep albeit their exhaustion but once Ryosuke lied beside Mirai, sleep had immediately taken them.
---
"Mirai-chan..." Ryosuke said, tapping Mirai softly.
Mirai stirred.
"We're already here." He said.
Mirai sat up, awake now.
She sighed. "Will you be going first, or would I?" She asked, taking her hat and putting it on.
Ryosuke stood up and took her hand. "Let's go together. I don't think we've been missed too much."
How wrong Ryosuke was.
When they arrived inside Narita Airport, there were tons of press there. They didn't know how it happened but everything they had ran away from was the first to welcome them.
Mirai pushed her hat a bit more down and whispered. "Go first."
Ryosuke squished her hand.
"No."
Mirai looked at him, surprised.
Ryosuke, with Mirai in tow, had marched on ignoring the press as they clambered towards them the first time they notice them.
Ryosuke placed her arm around Mirai as the media pressed on them asking thousands of questions.
The security had already spotted them and were already trying to help them get away.
Finally they had gotten on a cab one of the security had hailed.
Mirai was clearly stressed.
"This is a mess Ryosuke. What will we do?" Mirai asked, worried.
But Ryosuke had turned to the cab driver.
"The city office." He said.
Mirai looked at him.
"Why are we going there?" Mirai asked.
"They've already seen us. And surely they've noticed your ring. And they'd know the two of us went to the Philippines. But I won't let anything stop us now. We're handing our marriage certificate right now."
