I went to see my oncologist today and he told me that I would be taking three different medications in the chemotherapy. The first is Adriamycin the second is Cytoxin and the third is Taxol. I have heard of Cytoxin and Taxol before but not the other one. I will have to go to chemo every two weeks for 4 months then radiation and lastly I will be ( Read more... )

Glad to know you're getting a port put it. The chemo can be rather harsh on the arm veins after a while. It takes a little more prep work to start the chemo, but not getting stuck each time is a big benefit.

I don't know if they mentioned it, but if your blood counts don't bounce back well after chemo, you may have to start taking neupogen(http://www.neupogen.com/pi.html) which helps restart blood cell production. Starting a couple of days after chemo for about a week, you have to take daily shots. Before the port, C had to "stab" herself in the thigh every day for a week. If you have them keep the access to the port in after chemo, you can use that to take the neupogen over the next week. You'll want help and I'm sure Brad will be up to the task. You have to flush with saline, inject the nuepogen and then use a heparin flush to keep from getting clots. I think there was another saline flush after the heparin to clear the line. It sounds like a lot of effort to avoid stabbing yourself, but we got it to a quick routine.

Food tastes. Everything will taste nasty for a day or three. There are a few for which this doesn't happen, but chances are you won't feel hungry, nor will what you eat taste all that good to you.

Mouth sores. Get those mouth swabs that keep the mouth and lips moist and it will head off some of that. There is a particular gum that I can't recall the name of that also helps get the mouth moist, as dryness is one of the contributing factors to mouth sores.

I'll post more things as they come back to me... Good luck with the first chemo. You are not alone, we will all be there in spirit with you... K
